If you really want to know how the natives feel go HERE
Huge native forum, some good stuff, watch out for NDN/Chauchees posts though, you might have to get high to understand some of his ramblings. Good example of a day in the life of a native who hates whitey.
Donny_Brasco Donny_Brasco:
Actually, the point is we would like to do that sort of thing.
My great grandfather wanted to do the same thing. He started a business selling little farm tools he invented because they were not allowed to purchase regular tools to farm with.
The government would not allow him to build a shop to make these tools or borrow the money to build a building. He also could not leave the reserve to sell his tools or bring money he earned (when he snuck away to sell his tools) back onto the reserve.
For all of his efforts to provide for his family he was caught off reserve trying to sell his tools and sent to jail. To bad, I could be the great grandson of an Indian John Deere.
Instead, we were born the lowest of the low. I wonder if your life (or any other white folk) has been any better because your family has been allowed to build businesses and wealth for the last few hundred years.
If tha's the case, I can only hope you haven't lost all faith in doing things as your grandfather had tried... it would be awfully discouraging to anyone, I'd think.
That being said, those kinds of limitation aren't in place now - your grandfather would have been fine without making claims for land, no? Why not worry about the land claims after you're on your feet, so to speak?

Why not do it like a normal person. Buy the land, make a building, start a business. Really it is not that hard, my Great Grand father did it in the depression, I am pretty sure you could do it now.

This guy has a way with words,if he wasnt so rascist I along with other Canadians would have more respect for him.

Well said EVERYONE!
I LOVE APTN, but what prerequisites does your moderators need to have to REALLY become moderators? You have to be VERY sensative on how you edit our posts. One of my posts SUPPORTED Rez school survivors. And ONE little smidget of a wiget was DELETED, and that one DELETED portion changed my entire piece into a mockery of survivors. Which I would NEVER do. I love my mother. She is far more HEALED than my "leaders." She is 100% sober and has been forever. My leaders I see at The Casino hotel Publik. Or at Coach's Corner. EXPENSIVE drinking places! They challenged her in court once. She had to get a lawyer with her own funds. She used her widows pension. She was fired with no pay. No warning. Typical my band stuff. And my band LOST the case. Now guess what? She stopped all unwarranted wood lot licenses from being LITERALLY given away to "Canada" so our "leaders" could fill their nice brown bulging bellies. Now they are challenging her legally AGAIN. This time my mom has the JUDGE on her side, who ALREADY FORCED my "leaders" to pay her. Don't FUSS with moms.
I can't help but to feel a Chief n Council edge when it comes to moderating our posts. It's like our AGA meetings. The "leaders" sit at the FRONT of the hall. They are all facing the people (chair wise), but they look down at their DOODLE pads and pretend to listen. Than we try to talk WITH them, but the RCMP are waiting OUTSIDE for anyone who starts to try to get MORE of their attention. I hate cops. MY DOG hates cops. I never taught him that. He just seen them harrasse me his entire life. So when even a hottie cop comes up and tries to pet him? I say, "No! No! Don't do that! He will bite you!" Than I have to explain that in his 7 years, he has learned through INSTINCT to HATE that uniform. And my dog loves EVERYONE. I wish that hottie cop would walk up to us in her regular CANADIAN clothes and pet.....my dog!
But I respect you big time Mohawk Maniac. You are my kind of Maniac. Just a tad trigger happy. Make sure you remain humble as.....at least as humble as me. Lead by respect. NOT by fear. But who am I to talk? I am half chug, little bit of tribe, and the rest? GO OILERS GO!!!!! UUUUUUGH!!!
Cave man day! Cave man day! Perhaps I will call my band, "Cave Man Day!" Instruments that is. NOT the other doodle pad band! But APTN I am PROUD of. SO proud of! You are my CAVE. Where I can connect with loads of tribe from all over. And all you tribe? I love who you are! For I am the LEAST of all of you! And I ain't that less either! GO OILERS GO!!!! UUUUUGH!!!! Cave man day! Cave man Day! In no way do I COMPARE APTN to my Chief n Council. You are THEIR polar opposite. You let me speak. And no cop is taking me away when I rebuke them!
Like I said, the guy has a way with words.
He also speaks from the heart for his people as misguided as it may seem.
I kinda like Chauchee/EnDeeEns rants.
Enjoy folks!

Nothing, but the money from our land claim certainly helped start some major economic activity on my reserve.
1 down, 1000 to go.

Donny..Then you have been paid for your lands. You cannot claim them again.

Actually, personally we do have a business in our family and there has been some real economic activity from many areas of our province where land claims have been settled and money has been made available to folks who need a loan for a business or farm or whatever.
We are just getting started. We are just getting caught up.
I think you guys should be cheering on this process, because the more people we get involved in the
best social program "a job" the less people who will be dependent on government handouts.
And of course the less you'll have to worry about land claims and the such...
PJB PJB:
Donny..Then you have been paid for your lands. You cannot claim them again.
Really? You should become the government’s key witness then when these claims get to court.
They will be happy to hear that you have evidence that Canada has paid for all of the Native land it occupies. You'll be a hero, you'll save the Canadian taxpayers alot of cash!!!
And I sure would like to see the evidence you have on that.

Well, I'm glad your family is doing well. I honestly don't think the more.... hmm... 'publicised' actions by some are what's going to help yur cause, but hopefully things are improving.
I don't think anyone here wants to see you fail... just that sometimes the mood for cheering is drowned out by other feelings for other actions.

Donny_Brasco Donny_Brasco:
Reality is subjective. I am simply agreeing that we can both be right.
Maybe for you, but in this case it’s objective. No tangible link. That’s sound methodology. Don’t like it? Stay out of history.
$1:
“Furthermore, his argument does not disprove that we as First Nations had complex systems of government, justice and other social systems that pre-existed white people's contact with us.”
Argumentative fallacy. His salient point was that the founders of the 18th century republican American did not model it after the Iroquois Confederacy. That was it. No more. No less. All he had to do was disprove your erroneous assertion. You haven’t offered anything even remotely substantial to counter it, so his point remains unchallenged and yours remains unsubstantiated.
$1:
“All he says is that the Iroquois MAY have had an influence on the American system of government. What I'm saying is that they did have a huge influence on them”
Then prove with tangible, verifiable evidence that the Iroquoian Confederacy had “a huge influence” on 18th century American political development. I’d be extremely interested in seeing how you proof that point while addressing the myriad of other contemporary influences (such as British democratic principles and government, republican development and Enlightenment thinking) and how they pale in comparison to the Iroquois Confederacy.
$1:
“And if you were half the Master Debater you pretend to be you would try to prove me wrong.”
Tman already did. Why rain on his parade? Besides, the onus is on you to substantiate your point, not me. If you were halt the intellect you pretend to be, you’d know that.
$1:
“I would say that you have not a hope in hell of doing so”
All talk – you’re cannon fodder here, and I’m still waiting on the tangible historical links that prove with certainty that the Iroquois Confederacy had a “huge” influence on the crafters of the American Declaration of Impendence, the Articles of Confederation and the future legislators of the nascent republic (hint…there’s a problem for you, in that last one – let’s see you figure it out).
