i also forgot to mention ridenrain that at least in my riding at the time the ndp position was the long-gun registry was a massive waste of money and the ndp member(lorne nytrom) would vote against it.please understand i'm a very disappointed person...after the liberals trashing our country right after ww2..living out in western canada our votes NEVER count..we're wasting our time every time we vote since ont and que call the shots....it is truly a parasitic relationship..eastern and western canada..alberta provides all the wealth while basically a few select of gender-hostile lesbians in quebec get the luxury of calling all the shots..and when we did get anyone who we thought would stand up for us(clark, mulroney and now harper) we end up being let down...why do you say the ndp are worse than the liberals? they actually seem much more pragmatic...and since the red boogy-man is now gone the term "socialist" doesnt seem to have anymore application...come to think of it layton actually had some very good ideas

ridenrain ridenrain:
They removed the long-guns from the registry and have made substantial changes, at least on paper, to the way gun crimes are handles. Getting this through to judges is still the hard part.

Please feel free to vote NDP or whoever but I'd warn you that the NDP's opinion on this topic will be even worst.

Good Grief Ridenrain, when was the last time you tried to buy a firearm ? I went with my son, right before Christmas to a local gunshop and was informed that he still needed a FAL and had to registerer the shotgun he was looking at. I should have mentioned your name, that would have eliminated the need for these things eh! It did one thing good though, I checked my FAL and found it was expiring soon and so I did the paperwork and sent in for a new one.

I do usually vote NDP, however, in my riding Gary Merasty will get my vote as that will help keep one more conservative from going to Ottawa.

I think what will happen with the gun registery is similar to what happend to the "same sex marriage" thing. Harper knows that most Canadians are in favour of restrictions on the ownership of firearms and he would be in trouble in much of the country if he got rid of the laws concerning gun ownership. I don't know if its a fact or not, but I have heard that even in Edmonton, over 50% of people polled wanted to keep the registery. Who knows, but in Ontario and Quebec the support for this is very high. And I also think that most people in places like Toronto would just call for the complete banning of all firearm ownership if the could.
Best to let sleeping dogs lie and just try to clean up the way the registery is run. By the way, my renewal for my FAL, they sent me all the stuff without me asking and It took little effort on my part, just a short form and a photo.

i cant say for certain but i seriously doubt 50% of edmonton citizens favor the long-gun registry..in fact i'll make a ballpark guess that about 25% of western canadians do in fact favor long-gun registry..a classic example of how eastern and western canadians have totally different interests..but i will say to appease some of the die-hard harper supporters that harper is not the g.w bush(champion scum-bag) lap dog everyone accused him of being..now as far as the same sex marriage issue goes..i am not gay so this issue doesnt even concern me and i truly think that trying to garner votes by getting on the case of gays is very cheap politics..however as far as the gun registry goes..i have a 1900 remington double barrel shotgun that originally belonged to my grandfather(as well as a few other pieces)...now can you explain why i have to part with my money just to retain something thats not really even lethal compared to what other firearms are out there and is a very personal item to me??..but since it uses 12 gauge ammo it bypasses the antique status...so i had to jump through major hoops just to keep property that is my familys..at least i can say ive never voted liberal..only conservative and ndp..now that harper has disappointed me..my political leanings are now western canadian separation(manitoba to bc and the territories)

you might be supprised. I am sure someone here will dig up some old polling stats to prove it one way or another. However, it depends on who you talk to. Many people I know who are in favour of the long gun registery won't say so in an ordinary conversation because of the wild reaction the will get from those who oppose. If you only talk to one side, you only get one side of the argument.

icekarma2752 icekarma2752:
however as far as the gun registry goes..i have a 1900 remington double barrel shotgun that originally belonged to my grandfather(as well as a few other pieces)...now can you explain why i have to part with my money just to retain something thats not really even lethal compared to what other firearms
Better check if that old guy has a damascus barrel or not, it just could be lethal.

So you join Grainfedprairieboy is voting for the Western Independence Party. Why are you here then? Funny, I have great sympathy for westerners who are mad at the liberals for being corrrupt, not giving the west its fair share or other logical reasons, but gun ownership, hardly a good reason to vote to dissolve the country, especially when registering a firearm is just a pain in the ass for most people. I don't know anyone who has been prohibited from owning "granpa's old musket." After you get a FAL, you just do this thing, again, a pain in the butt, but not a prohibition.

you know your guns..yes it is a damascus barrel...and i hate the liberals for both the reasons you state..not giving the west its fair share and being corrupt...and believe me...i dont take my new political stance lightly and of course the issue is larger than the gun registry...but hey..whenever quebec wants to separate tremendous measures are taken at western canada's expense like always to prevent that...well news flash..western canada has vast resources..quebec has nothing..yet they rule the country..if they can play the game...why cant we??

I am not sure, but if it shoots 2 inch or 2 1/2 inch shells, you may still be able to get it in as an antique. Check it out. Otherwise, I think our ideas about western seperation and Quebec are poorly thought out and dangerous. Western Canada, and I live in Saskatchewan, is always crying about being exploited, and I can't see it. Standard of living is where it should show up. How is my standard of living any worst than that of someone living in Toronto or Montreal? The people who should be really pissed off are in the Maritimes. PET at least had the sense to talk about quality of life.
