This goes back to the beginning of confederation.

AB, SK, and MB were supposed to be 1 province called Buffalo, but Sir John A. McDonald wanted to keep the power in Ontario and Quebec, so it was split in 3.

Thats my general understanding.

So if BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba were to combine into 1 province (we could name it Buffalo for the historical significance), we would have a much bigger power within the Confederation and would have the political influence of Ontario and Quebec.

Population wise:

Ontario - 12,753,702
Quebec - 7,687,068

British Columbia - 4,352,798
Alberta - 3,455,062
Saskatchewan - 990,212
Manitoba - 1,182,921

Buffalo - 9,980,993

Thats basically 10 million, 1/3rd of Canada's Population.

That would give us the power to be rate up their with Quebec and Ontario in importance.

Your views?

In a word........ No

We're too laid back in BC and the rest of you are way too uptight. Start smoking more dope and we'll talk about it.

Actually only the Lower Mainland is Liberalish, and not all people in the Lower Mainland are Liberal either.

Everywhere outside of the LM, is pretty Conservative in BC.

QBC @ Thu Aug 02, 2007 5:29 pm

What does conservatism have to do with being laid back? or smoking dope for that matter. I know a lot of conservatives that toke a bushel.

The problem is, the four provinces you list, rarely agree especially on national issues. Hence why we have the provinces in the first place.

I never do understand why people want to rearrange everything in this country. And I have to say this "western alienation", is such bullshit. I chalk it all up to penis envy or little man syndrome.

I dunno, "The Buffalo Roughriders" doesn't have the same ring...

Wow! And you could also have us become a new Republic, with westmanguy as president. We could stop the teaching of science in highschools, ban abortions, stone unmarried teens who  " have sex", hang kids who steal a loaf of bread and introduce all kinds of new and progressive laws.

Scape @ Thu Aug 02, 2007 6:04 pm

No. However the idea of regional autonomy should be looked into. More inter-provincial agreements would be useful but a merger to one super province isn't a great idea.

westmanguy @ Thu Aug 02, 2007 6:05 pm

Of course their is WESTERN ALLIENATION!

And fireboy your be sarcastic, I believe the west provinces should join, not have a new nation republic with my President......

ryan29 @ Thu Aug 02, 2007 6:08 pm

myself i think all 4 provinces combined would just be too big to be one single province.

don't see the idea as being workable in real life .

westmanguy @ Thu Aug 02, 2007 6:11 pm

Ontario is large province in land area too.

WBenson @ Thu Aug 02, 2007 6:15 pm

How would you be any more powerful? You would still have the same number of MPs and Senators, and would need to figure out some kind of pseudo-federal relationship within the province for it to be workable, so all jurisdictional arguments would be compounded again.

I am being sarcastic, yes. WESTERN ALLIENATION--well, go figure. I was born in Toronto. I have not been back to Toronto sense 1979. I hear about western alienation mostly from well to do westerners who feel they would be even richer if the west had not been screwed over by "the east." I am assuming that they mean central Canada. The east is Newfoundland and all those super rich provinces over there. Most "ordinary" people are more mad at their Provincial Governments than the Feds.

Arctic_Menace @ Thu Aug 02, 2007 6:44 pm

Hells to the No.

Each Province is too different from the other. It would just become one big complicated mess. Why else do you think we seperated the NWT???

Combining the four western provinces would jsut become one big ugly mess and would make everyone out there more pissed off than they already are...

camerontech @ Thu Aug 02, 2007 6:47 pm

TattoodGirl @ Thu Aug 02, 2007 6:49 pm
