We have the Russians, Danes, French, UK and Iceland as our 'neighbors' as well. No one suggested we join them either that was not the point. The point is their countries values are not necessarily ours and we better find out what those values are before we commit to more hot wars that we are in already such as Haiti and Afghanistan. Do NOT use terrorism as an excuse because we will be invading every country including our own in an endless war. We need a defined foreign policy and know what we are going with and how long as we can be in only so many wars at once. It's time to pick the what we want to do and do it well for Canada.

Nobody is suggesting on here that we join the US. The debate started on here regarding the anti-US bashing that goes on in Canada.
Right. How about talking about the anti-Canada bashing that goes on in the US? (What I was doing, in part) Or is that not permitted because it invalidates your point?

I feel that we are very lucky to have the US as our neighbours. I'm not in denial like a lot of these communist wannabes. If profits and capitalism are so bad, go and live in North Korea for a while and then we'll chat.
Why is anyone against capitalism automatically a commie? Just because some dictator takes a couple of communist ideals and implements them doesn't make his government communism either. Even the CIA doesn't consider North Korea just a communist state, they consider it a "Communist state one man dictatorship."
(Ref)
At any rate, I'm just suggesting that I can now truly sympathize with Americans who had to vote in their last two federal elections. What it comes down to for me though is that I have no faith that Harper has the best interests of Canada in his mind, especially in light of the speech he gave. On that particular ground, I at least know where Paul Martin stands. I'm unsure of whether Layton would have the brass balls to stand up to the states, and it just seems to me that Harper would probably sell off land for missile bases for pennies if he thought it would earn him favour in the states. I'm not seeing it so much as a vote for Harper as it is a vote for Canada. IMO it's pretty sad that a potential leader of this country has such questionable loyalties.
Call it anti-American, but as I see it, it's more pro-Canadian, as the whole point and message of the damn thing is that we're in Canada, this is our country. I like how when Americans wave flags at ballparks and such, it's considered patriotic, but a Canadian does the same thing and it's like everyone is damned embarrassed of the guy.

The difference here is that Canada bashing in the US is not a national past time like US bashing seems to becoming here in Canada. When Tucker Carlson or Bill O'Reilly bash us their viewers see it and forget it 10 minuteslater for the most part. And I have never seen one of their national politicians slag this country, can we say the same? Nope.

Because communism is the tradtitional opposite of capitalism? And what possible difference could there be between a communist state and a communist, one leader state? There is common denomenator there.

Er.. what about Hillary Clinton calling us a terrorist haven, Pat Buchanan who's run for president, Paul Celucci.

Interesting observation. I have a US flag outside my home in California when the weather is decent and no one says a word about it - but when I bought my home in Oak Bay and put up a flag pole with a Canadian flag flying above a smaller US flag my new next-door neighbor actually told me it wasn't 'classy' to fly a flag at all! When I'm there they both fly, of course, but I found it odd to have a Canadian criticize an American for flying a Canadian flag in Canada - and your comment made me realize the root problem: my neighbor was ashamed to see his own flag.

I guess it depends on where you are. I know the time that the Raptors were in the playoffs (2002 Vs Detroit) loads of Raptor fans waved CDN flags proudly in both areans. It actually pissed off the detroit fans who didn't see it as a national flag wearing event as it wasn't CANADA VS USA. They actually started booing our anthem (then some Canadiens fans did it the next day and raptor fans did it the following day). Loads of pride there. I know travelling in Aus & the UK its the Canadians more then anybody who wear their flags proudly. My flag hangs in my window and my Landlord has a flag on a pole hanging from his balcony. It all depends I guess.

Bart, I think it's great to fly those flags. Don't even pay any attention to what your neighbour says. I am the opposite of you, I live in B.C. and in Washington State at times, and I want to put up an American and Canadian flag together at our place down there.
As for Martin and his going on about Canadian Values all the time, I think Jack had it right yesterday when he said that we only hear about these supposed values at election time.....ie. "values of convenience"

During the run up to the war in Iraq I bought a tri-flag holder for the porch and put the Canadian, American and British flags in it. People would pull over and knock on the door to yell at me
A couple threatened to take a poke at me
I had to take em in at night to make sure they made it rhough the night. Of course I would have struck the colours at sunset in any case

The sad truth is that the vast majority of Americans pay no attention at all to Canada, let alone bash Canada. Canadians are far more aware of the US than the vice-versa and that is detailed in our websites: how many threads on this site are about the US? Check Free Republic and see how many threads have to do with Canada...not many.
And you are correct that not ever has a President or Cabinet member bashed Canada. Americans would not forgive that.

Capitalism is the nature of a free market and Communism with its centrally controlled economies readily lends itself to the avarices of dictators. There have been socialist dictators as well (Hitler, Pinochet) but I cannot recall there ever being a dictator in a capitalist free market country.
Capitalism is anaethema to dictators because, by its very nature, they cannot control it. Fascists and tyrants hate and fear that which they cannot control.
In my life experience I've found that the most ardent socialists and Communists are almost always people who cannot hold a job, manage their money, or maintain a decent circle of friends. They have nasty personalities (IceOwl comes to mind as an excellent example) and blame their personal failures in life on eeeeeevil capitalism and they promote socialism/Communism because those philosophies serve their self-interests.
They can't hold a job with decent benfits so they want national health care.
They can't manage their money, have oodles of debt that they cannot ever imagine paying off, so they blame the system for their personal lack of discipline.
Their friends are amoral, untrustworthy, undisciplined, and "virtue" is not a word typically used by leftists. So their social lives are generally a mess and when compared to stable, happy, productive people they look like the miserable bastards that they usually are. So what do they want to do? They want to use leftism to destroy the culture that enables and celebrates trustworthy, disciplined, virtuous, stable, happy, and productive people because that's far easier to do than to face up to the failures that they are themselves.
In sum, the main reason Communist and socialist systems consistently fail is because both systems are the refuge of failures
ergo successful people don't need or want socialism or Communism.

How do you know they are lefties? For all you know they were were right wing in political and/or social views? Substitute "leftie" with "black" or "asian" and you understand what your statement sounds like.
