Unfortunately I'm not canadian, yet, but I really like "O Canada" and I think that's the better anthem for Canada...

Alternatively you can have our national anthem *lol* does somebody knows the german anthem? And we take"The Maple Leaf forever"...

O Canada is more tear jerking (well for me) but The Maple Leaf Forever is just catchy and it's a good song to play at a parade or something..

LeBenoit LeBenoit:
the mapple leaf song sound like a neo-nazi song, and most of people who like it must have realy bad identity problems

The song was written by Alexander Muir.. at a time when he wished to pay tribute only to the English, scots and irish....

The thistle, shamrock, rose entwined,
The Maple Leaf Forever

there was another version that came out that worked in Flor de leur
I did another post somewhere here, where I put in all the songs and the new version of the song.. which doesn't mention wolfe or britains dominance over the new world... when I find it I'll post the link here...

The Maple Leaf Forever.. played on bag pipes though.. sends chills down me spine... most patriotic song we have...
Glass tigers song "the thin red line" does the same for me... and I'm not even of Scottish ancestry...
Love the pipes though.. Blue bonnets, Black bear ,Scotland the Brave, Mull o' kintyre... all bring a chill to me spine....

Maple Leaf Forever. you have too remember this was the song that went prodly with Canadians through 2 world wars with the red ensign flying overhead.....

http://collectionscanada.ca/obj/m2/f7/17304.mp3 (this song version/link of the song was sung for King George the 5th)

and of course the politically sensitive version:

Maple Leaf Forever

Alexander Muir's 1867 up-the-Empire standard, which was Canada's unofficial national anthem until the arrival of O Canada, has new lyrics. The updated, politically sensitive Maple Leaf Forever, with lyrics by Romanian émigré Vladimir Radian, received its first full orchestral treatment on June 27, 1997 at a free concert by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
Radian, a mathematician turned songwriter/actor/poet, came to Canada a decade ago, completely unaware of Maple Leaf Forever and its crowing lyrics. He discovered the song while listening to CBC Radio's Metro Morning show in Toronto when it ran a contest to replace the old lyrics, which were distasteful to some ears and merely comical to others.

Maple Leaf Forever

O, land of blue unending skies,
Mountains strong and sparkling snow,
A scent of freedom in the wind,
O'er the emerald fields below.

To thee we brought our hopes, our dreams,
For thee we stand together,
Our land of peace, where proudly flies,
The Maple Leaf forever.

Chorus:
Long may it wave, and grace our own,
Blue skies and stormy weather,
Within my heart, above my home,
The Maple Leaf forever!

Sung by Anne Murray at the last leaf game at Maple Leaf gardens.. got the song on .mp3 but it won't load.. I'll try to put it on my website and link to it...

The songs that brings me to tears.. are Oh Canada.. and the Soviet national anthem.. sends chills down my back.....

English words to the song..... may not follow or believe.. but it is an extremly powerful song.... but not the maple leaf forever...

The Hymn of the Soviet Union

Unbreakable Union of freeborn Republics,
Great Russia has welded forever to stand.
Created in struggle by will of the people,
United and mighty, our Soviet land!

Sing to the Motherland, home of the free,
Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong.
O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people,
To Communism's triumph lead us on!

Through tempests the sunrays of freedom have cheered us,
Along the new path where great Lenin did lead.
To a righteous cause he raised up the peoples,
Inspired them to labor and valorous deed.
[Or, the old way:
Be true to the people, thus Stalin has reared us,
Inspire us to labor and valorous deed!]

Sing to the Motherland, home of the free,
Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong.
O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people,
To Communism's triumph lead us on!

In the vict'ry of Communism's deathless ideal,
We see the future of our dear land.
And to her fluttering scarlet banner,
Selflessly true we always shall stand!

Sing to the Motherland, home of the free,
Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong.
O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people,
To Communism's triumph lead us on!

.Soviet Anthem

Certainly, we know the song..

The "official" name of the German National Anthem is Das Lied der Deutschen, or simply, Das Deutschlandlied. The song is often called Deutschland ueber Alles,

http://eri.ca/refer/deutschl.MP3
Liked when Heino sang it a few years ago (this isn't hieno though) harzer....

1. Germany, Germany above all
Above everything in the world
When, always, for protection and defense
Brothers stand together.
From the Maas to the Memel
From the Etsch to the Belt,
Germany, Germany above all
Above all in the world.
2. German women, German fidelity,
German wine and German song,
Shall retain, throughout the world,
Their old respected fame,
To inspire us to noble deeds
For the length of our lives.
German women, German fidelity,
German wine and German song.
3. Unity and right and freedom
For the German Fatherland;
Let us all strive to this goal
Brotherly, with heart and hand.
Unity and rights and freedom
Are the pledge of fortune grand.
Prosper in this fortune's glory,
Prosper German fatherland.

Banned after 1945 by the victors, the Deutschlandlied is again the German national anthem, but only the third stanza is used. The first stanza is absolutely verboten, since it refers to the traditional ethnographic boundaries of Germany ("from the Maas [in Belgium] to the Memel [between the present day Kaliningrad area of Russia and Lithuania], from the Etsch [on the Austro-Italian border] to the Belt [in Denmark]"). Likewise, the propagandistic mistranslation of the words "über alles" has now become accepted "truth", thus precluding their use.

I suppose I could have just linked to 3 sites......

One of my favorite german songs from WW 2 Panzerlied.. don't know if you have heard it in the politically correct germany....

http://www.homepurchaseprogram.com/song-panzerlied.mp3

If there's storm or it snows,
Or the sun smiles on us,
The day is burning hot,
Or the night icy cold.
Dusty are the faces,
But joyful is our mind,
Joyful our mind;
Our tank roars ahead
Within the storm wind.

When a hostile tank
appears ahead of us,
Full throttle is given
And we close with the foe!
It's not our life we value,
For the army of our realm,
Army of our realm
For Germany to die
Is honor most high.

And if we are abandoned
By that unfaithful luck,
And if we don't return
To our homeland again,
If a bullet strikes us down,
If our fate calls on us,
Yes calls on us,
Then our tank will give us
A metal grave

With thundering engines,
Fast as a lightning bolt,
The enemy engaging,
Within our armor plates.
Ahead of our comrades,
In the battle, all alone,
We stand all alone
That's how we strike deep
Into the enemy's ranks.

With obstacles and tanks
The foe blocks our path,
We laugh about it
And simply pass them by.
And if ahead guns threaten,
Hidden in the yellow sand,
In the yellow sand,
We seek out our way,
That no one else found

...how the hell did Heino get into a thread about The Maple Leaf Forever?!? ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll side with the Maple Leaf Forever on this one. It's a gorgeous tune; real heart-in-the-throat stuff on a par with La Marseillaise or the old Soviet anthem.

Are the original lyrics alienating to francophones? Of course they are, but offensive lyrics can always be changed, as was done for the Maple Leaf Forever by Vladimir Radian. BTW, thanks Twister for your information about the new and old lyrics to this nearly-forgotten song. [B-o]

I like O Canada too, but IMHO The Maple Leaf Forever is a much more stirring tune.

I have to admit that I love O Canada and it's a great anthem for the great country of Canada. I will admit that I haven't heard Maple Leaf Forever. I want to but I'm happy with O Canada. :)

HockeyBabe @ Sat Aug 06, 2005 3:56 pm

well it's ok, GC but if you have speakers, you can search for it online...unless someone already posted it... O_o ;)

harzer_knaller @ Mon Aug 08, 2005 4:37 am

Hey Twister... are you a fan of Heino?

From where do you know him, in Canada...???

I think Paul Martin should ask Heino to sing the canadian Anthem...

twister @ Mon Aug 08, 2005 8:22 am

First time I ever saw a poster of Heino... must have been 1980.. I was down on Robson Street.. (Robson Strasse in those days best german deli's and shops in Canada.. now it's all trendy shops) It was Announcing a Concert.. Sing Mit Heino.... so I of course had to go.. The concert was 3-4 months later, Heino came to town.. I had heard him sing but I was shocked when I first saw him in real life... Such a deep deep voice...

I was really surprised when I heard him sing Das Deutschlandlied... because he sang the whole song... including the Section that was considered Verboten.. "the first verse"... Rousing cheer from at least 2000 people though....

Actually have a heino cd or two in my volkswagen......

We had a german girl play for us 2 seasons ago.. Inge Oelrichs from Cologne. she plays for the Cologne Brownies now. I asked her if she ever listened to heino.. " she looked at me and said maybe her mom did but she did not... made me feel old....

Okay I have to "enlighten" you!

The "Das Lied der Deutschen" IS NOT FORBIDDEN!!!

Fact is that just the last part of thet song is the national anthem of Germany, because the fucking Nazis used the whole song as national anthem too, like in the German Empire before, and because of the and the content of the first two strophes it is not part of the national anthem, becausw when we sing "Deutschland, DEutschland über alles, über alles in der Welt" someone who does not know the history of that anthem would think that we think that Germany IS the best of the world, but it is not meant in that way by the author August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben (he wrote it in August 26th 1841). He meant it that Germany comes first in minds, before family, job and so on, not that Germany is more important or even better then any other country. And in the time when he wrote that, Germany did not really existed, Germany was devided in more than 100 tiny states (the biggest one was Prussia), and an aim of Fallersleben was to unify Germany, like it was after 1871...

Are there questions left open?

;-)

So far from me, see ya

EDIT: eh, and Heino is really not famous and loved by the youth, old women (that means grannies and so) love him, not all but quite enough to keep him alive *lol*
