Who wishes this was still our National Anthem?? I for one do, I am sure Royal Highlander will back me up on this but is there anything more stirring than hearing this played on the pipes? Blame our tree hugging Gov't fore changing the anthem to keep Quebec happy YET AGAIN!! If you have never heard it, I urge you to seek it out online, particularly done well by the 48th Highlanders Pipes and Drums.
The Lyrics
In Days of yore,
From Britain's shore
Wolfe the dauntless hero came
And planted firm Britannia's flag
On Canada's fair domain.
Here may it wave,
Our boast, our pride
And joined in love together,
The thistle, shamrock, rose entwined,
The Maple Leaf Forever.
[CHORUS]
The Maple Leaf
Our Emblem Dear,
The Maple Leaf Forever.
God save our Queen and heaven bless,
The Maple Leaf Forever.
At Queenston Heights and Lundy's Lane
Our brave fathers side by side
For freedom's home and loved ones dear,
Firmly stood and nobly died.
And so their rights which they maintained,
We swear to yeild them never.
Our watchword ever more shall be
The Maple Leaf Forever
[CHORUS]
Our fair Dominion now extends
From Cape Race to Nootka Sound
May peace forever be our lot
And plenty a store abound
And may those ties of love be ours
Which discord cannot sever
And flourish green for freedom's home
The Maple Leaf Forever
[CHORUS]
Oh man....but I know the words to eh Canada...I don't want to learn a new one!
But it is not a new one bro, it is the original one
I think the maple leaf is cool. I think the us flag should have little maple leafs instead of the stars ,or some other plant life on it. I get sick of stars they are overused. lol.
Nice poem/song, but nothing can replace OH Canada now
CKA, you must never have heard it then obviously, although you are correct, our Quebec loving federal gov't could never do it now, like I said it is just an opinion poll, it is really not going to happen.
Here it is
I agree with Penatrator.
The Maple Leaf Forever is much more coherent with the history of the British conquest of Canada. Ô Canada was written and composed back in 1880 in celebration of "Les Canadiens".
The only problem with singing The Maple Leaf or God Save the King though is that they would not play that well with first nations nor would they with Québécers, Acadians and those who were already here before the conquest. Who would want to be reminded of it at every hockey game, eh ?
It plays much better on the pipes, and to the victors go the spoils
To the victors go the spoils...true.
But also true, victors have never lasted forever. Persian Empire ? Gone. Chinese Dynasty ? Gone. Roman Empire ? Inca and Mayan Empires ? Gone. British Empire ? Gone.
Lesson ? Whatever and whoever is taken by force outlive those who forced them into submission. Empires come and go but the people remain and go on to form new nations.
Oh yea,
The Canadian anthem rocks as it is. Although, I must say that the Maple Leaf is beautifully written.
Hey, about national anthems !!!!! I am sure you all heard what happened to the poor girl in Quebec City before the Canadian / US exhibition hockey game ? Poor thing, she forgot some of the words to the American anthem, and and fell down upon coming back unto the ice. I am glad she got a second chance by going on GMA (Good morning America).
By the way, if there already was a thread regarding this hockey anthem subject, I do apologize for posting this on this thread (vearing off the subject a little)
Getting back to the subject at hand....... The Canadian National Anthem rocks
I'll gonna answer you, big bad son of a bitch. (I'm talking to the Quebeckers-hater Penetrator)
I prefer the O Canada.
But I think that we shuld have a new one. The O Canada is old, now.
How many of you feel that it remain a link between the British and us?
I think that link shoul be broke. We could remain in the Commonwealth, but.... I tired to pay taxes to a old woman who comes only 2 or 3 days per year her.
A new anthem could be cool, and could represent what we really are: A friendly, cool, non-violent and helpful nation.
Interesting
Well, I remember the Friday assemblies in the gym of the school I went to. It was a pretty bilingual school so we had to sing Oh Canada in both languages. The French kids used to sing it this way:
O Canada (crotte de chat)
Terre de nos aieux (crotte de boeux)
Ton front est ceint (crotte de chien)
De fleurons glorieux (crotte de boeux)
They sang the parts in parentheses without moving their lips. The English kids learned to sing it that way too.
Hope that doesn't offend anyone. We were 11-12 years old and it was a joke for us.
As for "Maple Leaf Forever", reading the lyrics makes me understand why it was overlooked as a national anthem. It's just too old-boy British colonialist. It excludes a lot of people living in Canada. On the other hand, it sounds like what the Liberals secretly believe in, except when they're on the campaign trail, of course.
