The US made it to the Round of 16 - I can't find any info on the Canadian team...did they make it, too? :?:

Don't you start..

But kudos to the US team and especially Landon Donovan. He's put in a true captain's performance in each games and the team has played very well.

I don't think they'll do much against Slovenia Zip. I've been here so many times before.....sob....

I bet they'll win 1-0 very unconvincingly and lose on penalties in the next round.

Halfway to your prediction being true.

I suspect that Canada will win the World Cup in 2026, on a fantastic goal by the team captain (my son) who will be 23 at the time.

This headline is from the Irish Examiner:

Final act for Les Miserables

Theya re revelling in it in Ireland (recall that Ireland was elimated from the qualifiers for the World Cup due to a flagrant, deliberate handball by France's Henry)

The bloody Germans. Don't mention the war....

...unless we can throw them off their game. I'd like to see Crocuh do a Basil Fawlty goosestep across the German penalty area!

EyeBrock @ Thu Jun 24, 2010 4:14 pm

Plus I forgot to say how saddened I am that I won't be seeing those spontaneous celebrations of joy from Italian-Canadians that have brightened our TV screens in Toronto over the past few years.

Such a shame.

Oh and I think that the whole World Cup is lessened now our close allies, France are also out.

I'm sticking with this prediction:

Rooney gets sent off because the Boxheads have sussed out that he's a big cry-baby under that shit-head exterior.

England may just pull a draw out of it, shall we go with 1-1 or 2-2? Then the Boxheads will kill us on penalties.

To quote the great Gary Lineker, "Footbal is game where 22 men chase a ball around, but in the end, the Germans always win."

ShepherdsDog @ Thu Jun 24, 2010 5:48 pm

I guess soccer has to be a concession, seeing as they keep losing to the English when they engage in the German national pastime.

Never discount the Germans.........in any arena!

Well the first set of elimination games finished today with Uruguay continuing to impress as they defeated South Korea 2-1.

And Ghana scored in extra time to see off the US 2-1 in a hard fought game today.

I have to say it's too bad for the US; they were the plucky team that refused to quit and their run in this World Cup has done wonders to raise interest in soccer in the US.

Tomorrow, the two bigs of this round play out: Germany v. England and Argentina v. Mexico. Quite simply ladies and gents, don't make any plans until tomorrow afternoon cause these are sure to be two humdingers.

CommanderSock @ Sat Jun 26, 2010 6:45 pm

The Germans dominate even with inferior players. Their team work is second to none in Europe.

Germany, or England? The fuck cares? The Argentines will mop the floor with the leftovers.

This World Cup is going to be a South American affair, Europeans have never won it outside Europe. They certainly won't win it in Africa.
