Chretien blasts Harper for skipping Beijing
What's this thread about?
It's about Chretien slagging Harper for missing the olympics.
Since this is all about comparing Harper and Chretien missing the olympics,
You can't question Harpers reasons for not attending without also questioning Chretien's reasons for not attending those three.
It's really simple, and Chretien is wrong. There's also that understanding that ex-PMs don't slag present PMs.. but I guess that dosen't apply to Liberals.
$1:
the spirit of the Olympics and the inappropriateness of political action.
What kind of neuropathic kool aid has he been drinking?? Politics and international competition(Olympics, the Canada Cup, the World Cup etc.) are inseparable. Look at the 1936 Berlin Games, the 1980 Moscow Games and the 1984 Los Angeles Games. These are the most glaring examples, along with the Beijing Games, of the games being co-opted for political purposes. The Olympics are about as apolitical as the UN is effective, and anyone who can't see that....well there's no point in arguing with them because it's not nice to tease the cognitively challenged.

NO.
Its about:
1) Harper trying to gain political capital for a protest you say didn't happen but for which you (wink-wink, nudge-nudge) credit him for.
2) His and your denial of the importance of a 1.3 billion dollar economy on Canada.
3) Your inability to even inject some little bit of levity when its presented.
Face it. You are wrong. Political BS like this during the olympics is wrong.
No doubt when the multitudes of people around the world protest our native treatment in 2010 you will cheer them on and expect the games to be cancelled (as you believe the china games should) to address the issues.
Does Chretien have grounds to criticize Harper over his missing the olympics?
That's the question being asked here, and a question you refuse to answer because you're so far up the Liberal partys ass that you're lost.

Yes he does. In fact your argument gives him support.
He attended the US Olympics and if you recall he received criticism for not attending the others which you very likely screamed about.
In addition he didn't try and suck political cred out of it like you are giving Harper for his heroic and steadfast opposition to China.
As usual you never answer my questions.
What right does he have when he missed x3 the number of events?
None.
Why can't you just admit that Chretien looks like a fool over this?

What right do we have to criticize china based on your logic?
What about our invasion?
Everything is connected.
dodge.

Derby: You can't even admit that Chrétien's being hypocritical here, can you. He missed a number of games yet he's criticizing Harper for missing this one, only because it reflects badly with his business associates.
If you could strain the leash once and a while, you might have some credibility.
China no matter what we think it should do on human rights is a major international trade partner and even Bush recognized that and that is why he attended.. Harper is a loser ,, face the facts here.. he is not good for Canada on the world stage and he is not a good leader for the PC's he is lacking in political savvy and you have to admit ridenrain that he has only succeeded in maintaining his minority government this long by being propped up by the liberals.. I was in Mexico and France earlier this year and some people in both countries asked "what the hell is it with this guy" ... how is he staying in power" he is an embarrassment to say the least.. if you want to compare him to M. Chretien I would say on a scale of 1-10.. he is a 2 and Chretien was and still is a 9
If it's simply a matter of trade then, why forsake our closest and largest trading partner, the US, to join in with the ranks of Sudan, Mosambique, Noth Korea, Burma, and the other trading partners of China?

Why do you need to frame a context?
The facts are very clear. Chretien skipped 3 of 4 olympics.
Harper missed one of one.
What right does Chretien have to say these things when he is so much worst?
Could you at least comment on the CFL?
Was Harpers skip a political slight or an oversight? Make sure to assign guilt and credit in the same vein.
I notice you keep ignoring the macro-question concerning the spirit of the olympics and the inappropriatness of political action.
Noble thoughts Derby but the olympics has always been about politics.
And as Shep said, just look at Munich in 1936 to Moscow 1980 and LA in 1984.
Even the PLO used the 1972 games to murder Israeli athletes so they would get more media play. Good old Yasser eh?
The olympics has been politics by another means since the start of the 'modern era' games.
The olympics is about nationalism disguised as sport. Medal counts are by country, not indvidual athletes.
I hear your point but I think your the last noble sportsman left.....

You missed the point the US president attended,,knowing the importance of good relations with China esp. given the world situation as it is.. Harper should have attended the opening no question about it.. but then like I and others have said his reputation on the world stage and with humanities is dismal.. very dismal.
It wasn't Harper's choice not to attend. He gets all his foreign policy straight from the White House.

Is that why Bush attended?
It could be shown that Chretien takes his cues from the gangsters that run China.
Right after he left the PM's office, he went to work with them, following along with all his friends and relatives in Power Corp. Mulroney deals with some flakey lobbyist and it's front page news but Chretien works for the ChiComs and it's good policy?
Another round of kool-aid for the house.

It's the left-wing media. They have it in for you.
