Religion is a family thing. Not the state business.

I agree. That's why freedom of religion should be removed from the Charter.

We also have protection of "thought, belief and opinion", so protecting religion, specifically, is redundant.

You know what's funny. We expect people in Canada to have the right to take their kids from class when they sing Oh Canada because of a few words. Yet we don't expect religious people to have those same rights.
Who is we?

Who are you?

What is with this bullshit? You don't see politicians making laws on what can be taught at religious school. I am sure there are quite a few things parents don't want there kids to hear there as well but hey whos going to complain to the priest when there religious.

Did you even read the article? They aren't telling people what can be taught at schools.
$1:
A controversial Alberta bill will enshrine into law the rights of parents to pull their children out of classes discussing the topics of evolution and homosexuality.
They are allowing parents to decide what they want their children to hear at school.

Nice new avatar, Ruez. Love it!

I would hope, as a Scientist myself, that I could miss any singing of teh national anthem, since that has the word "god" in it. Also, since the word "fag" is heard in the average classroom about eighty times a day, I guess you wouldn't have to send your kid to school at all.

I personally have no problem with anything schools teach children. I also don't have a problem with parents being allowed to decide what's right for their kid. I think someone already said it, if they want to keep their kids ignorant that's their business.

Well I'm disappointed .

It's says nothing about the option to pull your kids from the discussion of Global Warming  :P
Discussions of global warming are science discussions. There may be disagreement on it, but it is still science.

Science...??? Hardly... It's science being massaged for a very scary political agenda....
Still science. As I said earlier, nobody, except a few nutbars on the right (and mtbr I think) is using anything except scientific evidence in their arguments on global warming. You say it is being "massaged for a very scary political agenda..." and that may or may not be true, but the people on both sides are still using scientific arguments.

I agree to an extent. But eventually whether or not you want a socialized education system. Even the US, the most capitalist country in the world, still has a socialized education system. I'm not much for socialism myself, but in the case of education, there's strong arguments for it, I believe. Education--whether by home-schools, private or public schools--is mandatory in all provinces. Public schools should accomodate to a adegree, but if the parents son't want their kids to learn about evolution, they should home-school them or put them in private schools.

Humm the US is not the most capitalist country. You would like to look data for Hong Kong or Singapour.

No way. I totally disagree. Just because a kid has morons or religious nut-cases for parents, that shouldn't be a reason that an education be withheld from him/her. Furthermore, public education benefits ALL Canadians. Even if I didn't have kids, I'd have to pay taxes for education because an educated citizenry is good for us all. It's called Positive External Benefit in economics.

Hmmm...Singapore is a very centrally planned economy. It's a far cry from a capitalist state.

You may disagree but in Canada people have the right to practice their religion. After 16 children also have the right to get no education at all.

Sure. And North Korea is not a socialist state. Maybe it's the economy classes that are not compulsory :P
