I have never supported or cheered despots on either side of the political spectrum but find it rather humorous that certain "lefties" are defending PM Potatohead gushing over Castro.

   

   

The bottom line: socialism breeds these abuses.

I support social initiatives, in the context of the broader and free capitalist system. People need social nets to have housing, education, healthcare (and options I would add). This is a big difference from socialism. In the end, socialism ends with supreme power, cronyism and massive abuses. A social system which provides one the basics of life and then the onus is on them. Free from interference in their lives, which is what ALL socialist systems engage in, humans can achieve, with suppression of thought and pursuits, everyone in the system suffers.

There are so many abusers in history, though I believe Mao and Stalin were the worst of the lot. Furthermore, they spread their systems like a cancer both among each other and to other nations who embraced their ideals. Wealthy, privileged leaders who enjoyed the good life and immense wealth while their own citizens starved.

I didn't defend Castro once. All I did was point out the background in Cuba, a background that was deliberately created by the corporate greed of the United States, that made the Cuban uprising and then Castro's dictatorship inevitable. By the time Castro got into power I imagine the Cubans were tired enough of what had been done to them over the preceding decades that they weren't going to protest too much over losing a worthless pseudo-democracy in exchange for health care, education, and other minor basic things like clean water so they no longer had to watch their children die of cholera and dysentery. That's what happens to people when you bash them repeatedly for long enough, that when someone comes along and gives them some stability and a semi-decent quality of life they aren't going to rise up in the name of a chimera like "democracy" that always let them down in the past, or was deliberately used against them by a foreign power for it's own monetary gain.

   

Yep, while Castro was a monster, so was American-supported Batista, just like Pinochet, Hussein and Noriega and every other monster the US backed as long as it was in American interests.

The only real difference between Castro and Batista was that Bastista was their (USA's) monster.

   

Better the monster you think you control than the monster you can't control.

   

Nonsense. It's the left in Canada and the US that is calling for censorship of dissenting opinion and in some cases jail or death for those who dare to oppose the group think.

   

The thing I find most offensive is that those of us who aren't falling for the bullshit anymore are still expected to go along with some kind of childish and idiotic OUR good guys vs. THEIR bad guys narrative. Seriously? Like grow the fuck up already. What happened in Cuba, Central America, and South America is the United States legacy of oppression and horror to live with, just like what happened in Eastern Europe, North Korea, and Cambodia is communism's legacy of atrocity. All this silly gathering into teams like we're going to win some kind of ridiculous point of pride because "OUR guys" were the last ones standing won't wipe away the basic reality of history.

The numberless dead that got chewed up and spat out all across the face of this world during the grand war between Us and Them no longer care. Why the hell should anyone else?
