That crazy git from Braveheart was a Paddy Gunny!
Seriously, I've never smoked pot...ever. The wig, the ascot, the fishnet stockings...well...
Sadly, I've never been able to find a pair of size 14 stilletto heels.
I call dibs on diplomat to Sweden!!!!!
Let me respond to my critics:
1) I had no "favourite" candidate: Smitherman and Rossi were say-anything candidates who stood for nothing except running for office. As I was already familiar with both of them from their resepctive provincial and federal Liberal communications, their Mayoral campaigning as 'Ford Lite' showed that they stood for and believed in nothing and deserved to lose. If I had to vote for somebody, it would have been Pantalone, but it was obvious that he wasn't going to win as the electorate wanted some change, any change, and Pantalone promised there would be very little.
2) I compare him to US candidates because the Canadian party system keeps these Homer Simpson types out of Federal and Provincial politics. Only at the municipal level do you see this type of absurd behaviour in Canada. In Canada, the Sarah Palins and Dubyas only exist at the city level. You will rarely if ever see this type of Buffoon as a candidate for Prime Minister or Premier or hold a cabinet position in any Canadian party because we have an elitist political system where the candidate is the party leader and the party agenda-setter. The Canadian candidate for party leader has to compete with, and win the loyalty of, other well-educated, well connected party elites long before they the voting public is ever engaged. Once chosen as the party leader, the other party members are subordinate to him. Neither Bush nor Palin nor Clinton nor Obama nor Reagan nor McCain nor any other politican you can think of in the US has been a leader of the party; each is simply the candidate chosen by the party to represent it in certain elections. Thus, idiots are often selected as populist puppent front-men.
3)Bart, your earlier posts on urban theory are not only wrong but don't make sense. On the one hand, you go on about small government and free market and then you say:
"Make your leaders build housing in the downtown - like San Francisco and Sacramento are doing."
-Is that tax-and-spend big government crowding out private developers with expensive social engineering projects?
Further, its private developers who want to build expensive office space in the core and charge high commercial leases for them. David Miller's Toronto fought many battles with developers who tried to put a luxury condo or commercial space on every corner.
Then you say:
"Oh, that also has to be coupled with more aggressive policing of urban crimes typically committed by unassimilated minorities"
Which is not only a racist cop-out of social problems that are caused by more than just "minorities" but the fact that crime is fed by conservative policies that drive down wages for low-income workers, cut public services to people who can't afford to them, and luxury developments that drive up housing costs. And the only "solution" the right wing has is to spend more on policing, spend more building more prisons, make more acts illegal and lock more people up for longer time and for even minor offences. Conservatives do more to CREATE criminals and GROW the environment that crime thrives in than anybody else.
Its okay BF. I'm sure Toronto would be much better off if no suburban dweller EVER drives down and spends their money there.
Its views like yours that drove Rob into the Mayors chair. Elitist, I know better than you attitude is exactly what drove people away from Miller and into Fords camp. The shoe is now on the other foot. Suck it up.
i love the typical arguments....Rob Ford is fat and brash.....ignoring the fact that Smitherman is also a fat dude, "furious" and brash, a former drug addict and a high school drop out....
But he wears a suit better and says the right things....so he must have been the obvious choice for Torontonians.....
If Rob Ford was a slim and fit man with a nice suit, he'd be the second coming.....the white Obama of Ontario....now? he's just Chris Farley.
