Chicago had buildings like this in the projects and demolished them for a reason.

Jabberwalker Jabberwalker:
Don't even enter a building like that that has no automatic sprinkler system. There is really no other way to fight a fire in a forty story building. You sure as hell can't do it from ladders.

It has now come out the building had no sprinkler system.
The theory was that each apartment was built as a self contained concrete box,
and any fire would be dealt with quickly because it couldn't spread.
And until the retrofit, they were right.

We didn't put sprinklers in Grenfell Tower because residents didn't want the disruption of fitting them, claims council chief

Kensington and Chelsea Council boss said residents didn't agree over sprinklers
Nick Paget-Brown said sprinkler weren't fitted as it would have delayed refurb
Experts say sprinklers could have been fitted in 24-storey building for £200,000

The UK and especially London have housing shortages that are beyond comprehension.
But yes, those old blocks should have been torn down years ago.

Strutz Strutz:
They are saying that it could be weeks before they are able to finish searching the building to confirm fatalities. It's heartbreaking to know there are still so many people unaccounted for.

I've read the temperatures inside got up to 1000C, that's what is used
in a crematorium.
It will take weeks to sort it out, and some will never be found.

Fireproof cladding that would have prevented Grenfell Tower tragedy 'would have cost just £5,000 extra' - and the cheap version that WAS used is BANNED in America

Hundreds of aluminium Reynobond panels were installed on Grenfell Tower
Three panel types - one with flammable plastic core and two are fire-resistant
Grenfell contractors reportedly chose the cheaper version with the plastic core
Panel with the plastic core is £22 sq m - £2 cheaper than fire-resistant version

And there we have it. Lives lost and shattered in the name of pinching pennies.

Maybe. That's just the exterior panels, nothing about the insulation behind it.

Too early to tell if it made all the difference.

It will take a long time to get all the answers. The panels will probably turn out to only be part of the problem. It will end up with half a dozen contributing factors that on their own would have been bad but together we get this.

The construction of the Cabrini Green housing project in Chicago was an act of outright racism and the planned failure of that project is why it was finally torn down.

The project replaced the core of a vibrant but segregated black neighborhood in Chicago. With the advent of the 1965 Civil Rights Act the mobbed-up white Democrats who ran Chicago were faced with the surging economic and political power of the black neighborhoods.

So in comes "urban redevelopment" under the guise of 'helping' black people.

Entire neighborhoods were bulldozed to make way for Soviet-style housing blocks and in perfect Soviet style that meant the destruction of the small businesses that provided black youth with entry level jobs, it meant the end of neighborhood bars and churches which were the centers of black political power in the 1960's, and it put an end to thousands of single-family homes.

It dropped a bomb on the black community and the black community never recovered. The planned failure of the project was a success for the white Democrats who still own and operate Chicago and disproportionately occupy city and county jobs.

Cabrini Green became legendary for crime and urban decay and the area is still a cesspool of drugs, crime, unemployment, and hopelessness.

Oh, but at least they had a 'right to housing', right socialists?

Chimpout in city hall, people demanding that residents of Grenfell are rehoused in Kensington, which is probably the richest borough in the UK, and top ten richest in Europe.

So they like their white hood, although they only cost money being there.

They also want the real number of dead released.

True. Unfortunately, the real answers will likely never be revealed in full. The public will only hear what the powers that be want them to hear.

Somebody should come up with a new reality show - "The Biggest Victim"

Basically anytime, any tragedy or societal problem presents itself, groups turn up explaining how they're the biggest victim.

Well, they're already playing it, of course, but some clever network should give the show a title and a weekly time slot in family hour. There could be prizes.

I know who I'd pick to win the pot at the end of the season.

Since 2010, more than 10,000 firefighters have been axed, dozens of fire stations have closed, fire engines have been scrapped and levels of emergency rescue equipment has been slashed. In London, 10 fire stations have been closed, 27 fire engines axed and more than 600 firefighter posts have been cut. Every year response times are increasing and 2015-2016 saw a 15% rise in fire deaths compared with the year before.

TAXPAYERS are forking out £726,000 a day to house and feed asylum seekers, the Daily Express can reveal.

The money for these freeloaders has to come from somewhere.

Yeah, it's a shame that a Conservative government let as many welfare-dependent foreigners in, to undercut the wages of native-born Britons and weaken the remain blue collar unions, as the previous Labour government did in order to build up a reliable liberal voting bloc.
