Keep trying to play this and every time I get overwhelmed and turned off. Sensory overload. They have added so much it becomes to much to take in.
I hear you. I am still discovering things from 3 updates ago.
But the previous update really changed things. This update added a lot more. Whole new class of ship, freighter battles, now stories.
My only suggestion is to go through the 'missions' and learn the basics. That will lead you to other side missions, and hopefully get you familiar with at least the base of the game.

Were the previews positive though? I saw the trailer and gameplay footage and it looked underwhelming to me.

True but the buzz by the game industry periodicals were very much trying to create a buzz. Then it came out and it was dogshit and they did a total about turn. They were caught out because of just how bad the game was. Asset flips on steam have more dev time.

COD4:MW was the last COD title that came with it's own server executable. You can modify it, and run your own server locally on your own hardware. Great way to eliminate the inevitable hackers. Modified servers also came with uniquely coded game types. Like 'Hide And Seek' where one team became in-game random objects, like barrels or destroyed vehicles. The other team, with limited ammo, set out to discover who was real and who wasn't.

So glad EA lost the rights to Star Wars. We never would have got a game like this under their regime.
