EyeBrock EyeBrock:
I agree Dim, my family live in Manchester, Cork and Dublin.

They would all like to live here!

I'm from Middleton (North Manchester).

Some of my family live in Perth Scotland, some in Oldham Lancashire, the rest in Wales.

Eyebrock, I've both studied over there and worked over there.

Where? In Surrey.
When, back in the 80's
How often have I been back.. well unlike Pluggy who's only visted once in 16 years.. I've been back over 5 times in the past 8 years alone and will be heading back over this summer to attend to business interests that I still hold over there.

I thought so, a holiday maker eh? You still believe that the standard of living and quality of life are the same in the UK and Canada? Or are you gonna admit that you may have made a teensy error?

Having just come back from 10 fun filled days in Blighty I am glad I now call Canada home.

Any of you miffed Libs/NDP types who want to bask is all that the Imperial mother land has to offer, feel free to bugger off on the first available flight.

And Ruserious, you actually believe that the UK has an equivalent quality of life to Canada?
You ever been there?

I loved it in Brighton. Its hard to judge the quality of life because there I was living paycheck to paycheck but I was just there to have fun, not build a career and a life.

Somethings are much cheaper there though. Bread for 1. I only ever paid about 30p for a loaf (around 75 cents). Cheese was cheaper, most canned goods were cheaper.

Other things were far more. Gas, meat, rent, utilities were all much more expensive.
Brighton's got one of the world's best piers/amusement parks.
The Rock Candy at Blackpool is a bit better though.

Of course if you really want candy, you have to go to Cadbury's World up in Birmingham.

Rock Candy? No way, come to Edinburgh for that. ;)
I plan on doing just that in another 3 years time.

On my way to play St. Andrews, Carnoustie and a few more courses ;)

Holiday maker EyeBrock?

What part of the fact that I hold business interests over there did you not read?

I think those were Ruserious words.
I didn't see any links to Steve Harper saying that.
Just a figment of his imagination. Like the UK's standard of living being higher than Canada's.

But hey, why let untruths get in the way of posting your message, he's a Liberal!

EyeBrock @ Sat Jan 14, 2006 1:53 pm

Ruserious, you want to stand by your statement about the UK and Canada's stanadard of living comparisons?

You see I have this thing about making sure people who talk crap about my country of birth and the country I went to war for.

I just need you to sort this matter out, I couldn't give a toss about you jetting off there to visit 8 times in the past few years, really.
But I do care when you use blatant untruths to support your ramblings.

It was under the Liberals that Canada had 7 successive #1 rankings as the most livable by the UN. That was 1994-2000, or just after we ousted the conservatives.

Previously we were # 1 in 1992, 1990, and 1985.

Apparently we Liberals were doing something right after all.

Um, jackass, yes I do stand by my statements that Canada and the UK have an equally blessed standard of living.

You see, I have this thing about making sure to refute those who disparage my country of birth and my family's country of birth as being somewhat less that stellar when it comes to a quality of life.

Unlike you EyeBrock, I'd be quite happy to move back over there. The quality of life is just as good there as it is here.

To pay for their promises, the Tories will scrap child-care deals signed with the provinces over the last year by the Liberals, a move saving $4.8 billion.

That has sparked concern in Toronto where officials worry about the impact on new daycare centres that are just opening — and relying on the federal funding.

But yesterday, Harper suggested it was the city's tough luck.

"I'm not responsible for the City of Toronto budget ... The agreements the federal government signed are only guaranteed funding for one year," Harper said.

Well there's a real shocker, Harper doesn't give a shit about the economy of Canada's largest city.

Cities are of provincial juristiction. Harper is actually following the constitution. If Toronto wants more money, then let them look towards the Provincial Government.

Derby, that "index" was a load of crap though really. I'd prefer to go on a "GDP per pop" index to give me a real insight into realtive standards of living.

The Liberals have little to do with the fact that our economy has grown for the past 8-10 years. I'd say it's grown despite the Liberals.

This is the period of huge worldwide growth, the Liberals had bollocks all today with the planet moving forward.

But I know what you mean re Canada vs UK standards.

Okay then, In 2004 according to GDP per population, the U.K, ranked 10th in the world.
Canada ranked 19th.
Which would mean to say, using your own arguement, that they have a higher standard of living than Canada.

Not to be impolite, but Stats are numbers to me and in no way really paint a true picture of what goes on in a nation.
