The English Debate
Well the best thing we could be doing in all honesty is planning for it right now. To be prepared for troubled times is the best. The age old buy Canadian thing will HAVE to happen. Basically if a the world sinks into depression people go to work on R&D and infrastructure.
Worst case scenario is a deep depression. In that case you would need to protect the homeowners and get them working somehow, someway, usually that results in putting them to work on infrastructure and development gov't companies to achieve this. A smart man once said "Capitalism will never fail because Socialism will always save it". Remember a depression doesnt mean that things dont exist which need to be done. It just means the economic systems are messed up. People will work. If you research Franklin D Roosevelt and THE NEW DEAL. Canada would have to implement a modification of that strategy. Its proven to work and yes would work for us as well.
Saying we are not going into a recession is DUMB. Sorry it just is, we are certainly AT LEAST going into a recession (if we arent already in one)
Johnny_Utah Johnny_Utah:
Again why did you quote my negative comment/point?
Because I don't just hand out negative rep to anyone that gives it to me? Because you're a dolt that thinks he's being clever by making vulgar comments about political leaders?
You accuse me of derailing the thread by commenting on the tactics of the debaters, while the best you can muster is calling one of them a "fat lesbian".
Face it, you gave me the rep because you didn't like getting it yourself, you could at least have the balls to admit that without claiming I'm "derailing" anything.

Your policy is right out of the 30's. Sorry this is a different century and we don't build roads with picks and axes anymore.

Well I'm taking my dumb ass down to an appointment at my bank to dump a bunch of money into some more investments at 1:00 so I'll have to follow this up a bit later. Call me crazy

I think Mr Robert confuses Canada for the US... Really, The Canadian economy and the US economy are just as linked as the US and the European... It is not so that because it is just a line on a map that separates the countries they act and react the same...
No but we can go to work building new power plants, retool the auto-manufacturers to build other things.. Solar panel production? So many things that we could sell to the world and people would buy. UofT has developed a paint which can harness the suns energy. We could start building that. Develop hydrogen on demand vehicles like China already has!
We can use this to bring our society and level up. Or just sit around and suffer. -Assuming we do go into a depression with the US.
Thats fine you can make a lot of money in during the uncertainty, just know when to pull it and place the profits if any into things like Gold and Silver. That will help secure you long run.
The US feeds you. The US brings you products. You sell the US resources and less and less products. It's not like we are completely different from them. We are very similar in a lot of respects and in fact now are becoming more so as they socialize.

Yeah we’ll just have the masses of people with hammers run up to a field and start building a nuclear plant next week. Then you suggest the government start competing against private companies already in business. Then “retool” the automotive industry to build something else? Hope the big 3 don’t mind the take over.
Did you know that one of our banks was considering buying one of the big 3? Incase you didnt notice they aint doing to shit hot. You think its not possible for a country to buy Automotive plants on its own soil and with it people to help run it?
Gov't can work directly with private companies in times of trouble you know...Its not unheard of to have a stategic partnership.

So did they buy it? CIBC was the only one with significant money lost in the US is that who's not doing so shit hot?
I think it's totally possible for a country to buy an Auto plant, but it's usually in places like Russia in case you haven't noticed. Government should NEVER compete with private industry.

Do you have an example of this on the scale you appear to have knowledge of?
Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships

They work together all the time. Gov't gives money right now for R&D but the problem is their is no regulation on that money. They take the money and do what they want. When the gov't cracks the whip or has ownership they can ensure that money is not squandered by delinquints. Ask yourself, do you think that North American Auto companies were well managed?
To further stress my point on the ability of the Canadian people.
Canadian Production
Canadian industrial production during the Second World war.
11 billion dollars of munitions
1.7 million small arms
43,000 heavy guns
16,000 aircraft
2 million tonnes of explosives
815,000 military vehicles, 50,000 tanks and armoured gun carriers
9,000 boats and ships
Anti-tank and field artillery
Naval guns
Small arms and automatic weapons
Radar sets and Electronics
Synthetic rubber
Uranium for the ’Manhattan Project’
Obviously we are not at war but when the shit hits the fan we can start to work!
I see..
9000boats and ships? Could we not make Merchant Marine ships for trade?
Instead of Ammo how about Solar Panels
Instead of military vehicles how about Hydrogen on Demand vehicles
Power plants
It goes on and on.. The possibilities here are endless and we could come out looking like a hero with the right people in power doing the right thing for the people.
Again I just want to add and you all must know this.. We are sitting on one of the largest caches of raw resources in the world. From Uranium to Precious and standard metals to Tree's. We have everything we need to be Self sufficient in a crunch we have the technologies and top level scientists, inventors, engineers etc to weather any storm outside of natural catastrophes

Impressive list……….if it was September 1939.
Supply Demand, Import Export, Interest Rates, Centralized banking model, Inflation... Whats different now with the fundamentals?

You have global competitors and no demand. Who’s going to buy the “ship, tank, bullet or solar panel” from you? Also what does Joe’s Shmuck’s Solar Panel Manufacturing company do when the government starts making them Comrade?
