The Tory Platform

Well because I only have a god daughter I dont know much about the resp's so I'll leave that to people with kid's.
When I was married I was up on that stuff but that was long ago.
So I cant really comment on that point, but I still like the idea of a tax free saving's,might be nice for a rainy day fund and not having to pay 10 % when cashed and then more at the end of the year(depending on your gross) and actually having it put you in a higher tax bracket so you dont even get half.Usually a divorce.

Wow. Sounds like you had a pretty rough time in your past.
I'm not opposed to the tax-free account on it's own merits. It's a good idea. If you dump money in and take it out soon, there's no interest to speak of to tax, so the government's not out much. It just pisses me off to hear Harper push it like it's some wonderful gift he's given us when he killed another savings plan that, in my opinion, was better for both me (as I have one kid and hope to have another soon) and for Canada.

Not rough,it's life.
We had one even though we had no kid's(resp) but that wasnt my department.

So I have to wonder where Derby,Kenmore, and the rev are?
Cruising the blog's for cut and pastes as they feverishly try and find something wrong with the con platform?
Their on here steady untill Steve releases the very platform they were asking for and now the silence is unreal.
ziggy ziggy:
I like the tax free savings idea that the government can never tax.
Yeah, I'm sinking 5K in one asap. I hope the rates are good.

The possibilities are literally endless.

Have they started the savings program yet? I all most forgot about those. What's the max contribution per year?
That should read the tory flatform.. too little too late...
all the other partys have better to offer.. even the bloc.

Well of course they do, they don't have to worry about actually following through with their promises (not that any politician does but you know what I mean)
Harper has a pretty poor record when it comes to following through on promises, Dino. He's running about 50%.
He doesn't really have a platform either. What he has is a collection of promises that were cobbled together in response to criticism from the opposition. That's why he didn't have a platform until the opposition parties took him to task for it. Now he's releasing his "platform" after the debates and after the advance polls closed. It looks a lot desperation to me.

Cobbled together platform? As opposed to what, Mr. Layton's "THE SKY IS FALLING" platform? HA!
What do you think would happen Rev if Layton had a chance to cut those corporate tax breaks like he says he will? Taking into consideration the state of the markets and the credit crunch at the moment. I'll give you hint, it starts with "Lay" and ends with "offs". Now what do you think is preventing Canada from having a similar housing crisis such as that in the US? .........

.... don't know, again I'll give ya a hint here "jobs". Even Dion has enough sense to know this. I may not like Dion's Green Shift but at least the guy has enough sense to promise tax breaks in return.
Layton wants to shut down the Oil Sands, oh I'm sorry I mean have a moratorium. What do think the results of that would be? Ya lets hit one of the few productive sectors in Canada with a moratorium at a time when they are also taking the biggest hits being seen on the markets. Have you looked at Encana or Canadian Natural lately? Do you even know what their symbols are? ECA and CNQ respectively, go check them out. Add to that cutting back corporate tax breaks which they have budgeted around and then why not slap them with a cap and trade system while were at it.
BUT DON'T WORRY WE HAVE THE ARTS TO SAVE US!!! Because we all know how much they add to the economy and how many jobs they create.
And what is with the utter BS about saving the manufacturing sector. First Layton proposes to reverse all the corporate tax breaks and then he turns around and says he's going to help the ailing manufacturing sector in Ontario?????? HUH!?!
The only thing Layton is promising is personal tax breaks and to spend money like it's going out of style. That's great because were gonna need as many tax breaks as we can get because we'll all be out of work.
Quite trying to tell me how friggin great the NDP is with out backing it up with any legitimate arguments.
Nice scare tactics there, Dino. Is fearmongering a prerequisite to becoming a Conservative supporter?
Layton never said he wanted to shut down the oil sands. He said that we need a moratorium on further development. That matches what a lot of Albertans have said because the boom is out of control. Of course now that oil prices are dropping, the boom will end. And neither Harper nor the Alberta government have done anything to prepare for that.
Layton is smart enough to realize something that Harper isn't too. Companies that don't make a profit don't pay taxes. Tax breaks mean nothing to them. By taking the $50 billion Harper was going to give away and using it to help struggling companies, he would preserve jobs and make it possible to create new ones.
Quit trying to tell me what the NDP platform is when you aren't smart enough to read it, Dino.
This thread is about Harper's platform though. It's a bunch of little promises designed to fool specific demographics in ridings that Harper is targeting. Most of it is goofy, and the remainder is ineffectual. It's the worst kind of political pandering because it pits certain groups of Canadians against others. It has no vision, no long term outlook. It's an appeal to fear and greed, nothing more.
$1:
Conservatives: approx $1.9 billion/year
Liberals: approx $8.6 billion/year + $10 billion in other promises
NDP: approx $4.575 billion/year + $2.4 billion in other promises
Greens: not costed

Rev..We simply don't need Dion's new taxes and Jack driving even more businesses out of canada. We can't all work for the government.
Hey, Harper has been the biggest-spending PM to date, Riden. His record is one of extravagance and fiscal irresponsibility while pandering to special interest groups.
His spending hasn't created high-quality jobs though. Instead it's created low-paying, low-benefit service jobs. Ontario has suffered brutally while Finance Monkey Flaherty told the world not to invest there. Harper has a steady hand on the tiller, but he steers like the captain of the Titanic.

Jan. of 2009. And $5000 is the max per year. The limits will rise in years to come.
