So Iran Contra wasn't what did the trick? What's her face stuffed papers down her pantyhose for nothing?

Iran Contra was a means to finance the rebels in Nicaragua despite the opposition of a Democrat Congress.

There was no love between the USA and Iran. The two sides just used each other.

Only the people who do not know the taste of real beer drink that crap (think 16 to 23 year olds). Any real beer drinkers enjoy full flavoured beer from a number of regional breweries across Canada. As Gunnair has pointed out BC by itself lays claim to quite a few options.

Vancouver Island Brewery's Scottish Cream Ale is my favorite and on those times I drive up there I always drive back with at least four cases of this in the car. [B-o]

I don't believe they make it anymore.

Sleeman and Kilkenny both make a cream ale that's pretty tasty, although the Kilkenny is better

I still think the two go together - it hasn't changed. Look at China ramping up its military as it gets richer. The military might not be used for outright invasion and conquest anymore, but for pushing your weight around and defending what you've got. The US has been an example of that, and as it's wealth declines there are fears of its declining military power.

Not really. The military as an extension of diplomacy isn't what it used to be, now it's sanctions and embargoes that Goverments seem to use more.

Take a look at Iran, had this shit happened forty years ago Terhan would already be an American forward staging area.

The only reason you keep a strong military now is to protect your financial well being, ie, resources or, for the usual regional bullying (see China).

But, if large military's showed how rich and much of a super power a county was, North Korea and not Disneyland would be the "HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH". [eat]

I thought we were talking about superpowers, not if a large military makes you happy. The underlined sentence is saying about the same thing I am. You still need that military power.

Maybe but, to me a superpower is a country that projects it's policy all over the world finanacially and can ramp up it's military if required because money is no constraint.

Although I do agree that you need a strong military but, I think the days of the countries like the Soviet Union pretending to be a auperpower are over.

The reality was they were only a super power to the extent they had a large cumbersome out of date military and the bomb. The US proved they couldn't compete with capitalism militarily or finanacially.

Especailly when Reagan started his mythical star wars plan that essentialy bankrupt the USSR when they tried to keep up with the Jones and ended the communists rule and reduced them to a have not state..

I think to be a superpower in todays age you've got to have that financial clout even more than the military might and China is defiantely a superpower because it also owns most of the US. :lol:

MUCH better. Every product that comes out of the Sleeman plant has a burnt flavour. I can't describe it as anything else but I'm not a fan of any Sleeman product. Creemore Springs is local micro that makes a really delicious cream ale.

Cannot stand Kilkenny... at all.

Ok so now we are talking about beer ! That's great eh ! :lol:

Sure, microbrewery beers are so much better and more sophisticated. We have several here in Quebec that could very easily go up against some of the best in Canada. I must say that I have taken a real appreciation of the local microbreweries. Also, it sure would be nice to know if those finest Canadian Microbrewered beers can be sold across Canada or are only sold in their regional markets.

I also have to say that I fancy some of the ''real'' European beers, and talking about those actually brewed and bottled in their country of origin.

raydan @ Fri Mar 09, 2012 7:37 pm

Where I buy my beer, they have over 700 different kinds... all micro-brews... all from Québec.
Plus a few imports... but not that many.

I love and respect Canada. However, I would be more impressed superpower-wise if Canada:

- Had at least two super aircraft carriers.
- Had nukes.
- Single handily took out some dictator somewhere.
- Brewed more of it's own beer.
- Brewed better beer.
- Could solve problems in the Middle East.
- Sponsored a joint strike fighter that the U.S. could purchase.
- Had a real bad-ass prime minister that inspired fear and pissed off people around the world.
- Hosted the United Nations.
- Was on American network news every night.
- Put up a space station with a big maple leaf on it.
- Had spies all over the world.

I am sure there is more... take the United Nations please. I would bow to the North.
If I may add my wishes to that? I would be impressed, IF Canada

- was a neutral country;
- was peace loving and peace makinginstead of bombing Libya, Afghanistan;
- would stop imitating the Brits and Americans;
- would help the Palestinians to get their Land back or most of it;
- would deal with the Natives, so they will be happy;
- would stop the baby seal killings immediately;
- would condemn torture everywhere;
- would get the Americans to clean up their mess in the Great Lakes;
- would abolish Tuition fees for low income students;
- would make Peter MacKay pay for the cost of his fishing stint - $49k;
- would finally get completely out of Afghanistan;
- get out of that criminal NATO.

:D

Wow dude, that is like the Daytona 500 of beer stores! Over 700 micro brews under one roof? I am jealous as hell. You could try a different beer every day and it would take almost 2 years to try them all. By that time they would have came out with many more types to try. What a predicament to be in.

I am really looking forward to getting to Canada again to sample some of that beer! I have a timeshare at Whistler. Will have to look around there to see what I can score. [B-o]

Here is where I might get an impression of Canadian beer:

Top 10: Canadian Beers

And perhaps a knowledgeable person could edit an update to this wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_beer

If Canada can defend it's claim to the NW Passage, claim the North Pole and that little island near Greenland, then it might be a superpower.

raydan @ Sat Mar 10, 2012 8:22 am

Only one good beer in that top 10 list and I have some in my fridge.

Here's a better list...

Holy fuck! If that is the top 10 beers in Canada, then the top restaurants in the US:

10) Arbys

9) Dennys

8) Hooters

7) Popeyes

6) Taco Bell

5) IHOP

4) KFC

3) Wendys

2) Burger King

1) Mcdonalds

Wow... :roll:

Great List! The biggest problem is the availability across Canada. In Calgary I can find the odd micro brew from Quebec, but they are few and far between. There is a better represntation of BC beers, but there are several award winners I have never seen here.

Micro breweries by definition do not make the large quantities to be nationally represented, which when added to provincial barriers to trade means that unless you live close by you won't have the option of buying it in your local beer store.

This is why, when we travel, I tell my wife we need to make an effort to sample the local products. That 'we' should be 'I' as she does not consume alcohol. Telling her it is part of the vacation experience has been working so far. :D
