There is discussion about this story on another forum thread,
filibuster-cartoons-f72/canada-s-latest-conquest-t100068.html

But this is a different slant. That is contemplating Canada as a superpower. Please see:

In years past, a superpower nation would have been a colonial power. That's Gone.

Then a superpower is a country with nukes. Can't use them. Stupid to threaten or intimidate with them. Otherwise North Korea would be a superpower.

That leaves economic power. Canada fits this bill and in this regard Canada is a power. I remember when we thought that Brazil might become a superpower, but that didn't happen. And distinctions get blurred as we are now all so inter-dependent.

I love and respect Canada. However, I would be more impressed superpower-wise if Canada:

- Had at least two super aircraft carriers.
- Had nukes.
- Single handily took out some dictator somewhere.
- Brewed more of it's own beer.
- Brewed better beer.
- Could solve problems in the Middle East.
- Sponsored a joint strike fighter that the U.S. could purchase.
- Had a real bad-ass prime minister that inspired fear and pissed off people around the world.
- Hosted the United Nations.
- Was on American network news every night.
- Put up a space station with a big maple leaf on it.
- Had spies all over the world.

I am sure there is more... take the United Nations please. I would bow to the North.

If we did all those things then we would just be another US, and look what that would get us. :D

We are more likely to hold the door open for you, say please and thank you, wait our proper turn and help those less fortunate while quietly amassing wealth instead of debt.

None of that is necessary, if you have a Mind Control device.

No to carriers - too expensive and we won't be buying used warships again anytime soon.

No to nukes - had them once but it was too unpopular.

Pitcairn Island had better watch out.

If you don't think we brew a lot of our own beer or even make a lot of our own wine, then you need to expand passed your knowledge of Molson.

If you don't think our beer is good, go drink some Rainier. Hell, The Island has some of the best microbreweries in Canada, and that just The Island.

We had the Arrow, you guys disliked competition.

He already have PM Harper.

Host the UN? Some useless expensive organization that essentially does nothing? We already have the senate.

We are on the American networks every time you guys block Keystone and we look to sell oil to your economic competitor.

Canadarm was pretty slick.

Spies... all over the place. Uh... yeah. 8)

Bow to the north anyway, it can't hurt to hedge your bets.

We've been the world's superpower for years now. You just don't know about it because we're such an unassuming bunch... that way, we can control everything and nobody's the wiser. 8)

DanSC @ Thu Mar 08, 2012 9:58 am

Canada is not Brazil, Russia, India, or China, so no.

BartSimpson @ Thu Mar 08, 2012 10:09 am

Mr_Canada Mr_Canada:
Lol no, it's going to be China.

Nope. China's sooner or later going to go the way of the Soviet Union and while they may become a regional power they won't become a superpower for the simple fact of geography. They will never have a military influence in the Atlantic or the Mediterranean without really pi$$ing off the players in the Pond.

True enough, the PM at the time wasn't worth 1/10th of what the country was paying him.

Why would anybody want the job the position is highly overrated, costly and hardly worth it!

Freakinoldguy @ Thu Mar 08, 2012 2:31 pm

The next world superpower won't a miltitay power but an economic one. The worlds changed from the days of whose got the biggest dick militarily speaking to who's got the biggest dick financially.

Our problem is, smaller population, larger size of country and a what appears to be lack of will by all our governments to be keep what's ours by enacting laws that protect our resources and riches from the pillfering fingers other countries.
