Arctic_Menace Arctic_Menace:
I never understood why French was such a problem for so many people. In Europe and many nations around the world native inhabitants know at LEAST two languages. In Europe, it's not uncommon to know AT LEAST three. As if language is such an inflammatory issue for people on both sides. Let's all just calm down and work on our similarities.

Yeah the continual comparison between North America and Europe is such a valid one. 47 Countries in Europe, 3 in North America. Official Languages spoken in Europe around 40 or so and 3 in North America. Being exposed to another language in your day to day activities has nothing to do with learning one. Uh huh.

$1:
Oh, and FYI Bodah, Ottawa is pretty much 1/2 french and when you include Gatineau, Quebec on the other side of the river...

No it isn't. It's 20%. How's that relevant to the French first policy of the Olympics in BC anyways ?

Zipperfish @ Mon Nov 08, 2010 3:40 pm

2Cdo 2Cdo:
French as in France, because France was the site of the first modern Olympics, I believe.

Athens, Greece in 1896.[/quote]

Ooops indeed. I've been bum-steered. That's what someone told me.

I was quite surprised by Fifeboy's response. I would have thought that such an articulate, eloquent, and rational response could only have been penned by someone from the Gravelbourg (or similar) area.
Nope, most of the
Fransaskoise I know are from the Debden area. Nice folks. You may have noted I am of English decent. Born in TO, live in Saskatchewan. Yep.

Thanos @ Mon Nov 08, 2010 6:21 pm

All this 'Englisdh first" stuff was the original fuel that ignited the Quebec separatists in the first place. And thanks to a supremacist attitude we've been stuck with this separatist/sovereignist bullshit for over forty years. Gee, whitey, thanks a lot.

Magnanimity: now there's a good old English word that the anti-French bashers should have looked up a long time ago.

EyeBrock @ Mon Nov 08, 2010 6:28 pm

I'm all for the French getting a break and I agree Thanos. Ill thought-out Anglo bigotry was instrumental in the Separatist movement’s creation.

I support the freedom for each individual to use whatever language they want. Knock yourself out. But as an economist, I think of things in terms of efficiency. We'd be better off as a nation to pick one language and say "That's THE official language". Since English is much more prevalent, globally, it would make sense to choose English over French.

But if we're really looking to improve efficiency and put the goddamn language debate to bed for good, we should get together, globally, and pick a "human language"; one language that all humans will learn. I don't give a shit if it's English or French or Mandarin or Polish. Pick one language as the language of international trade, official proceedings, etc. We exist in a global village in the 21st century. It's long past time we moved toward a common form of communication.

ShepherdsDog @ Mon Nov 08, 2010 7:12 pm

I prefer espresso

EyeBrock @ Mon Nov 08, 2010 7:15 pm

I like Stella Artois me'self. Simple chap that I am.

Lemmy @ Mon Nov 08, 2010 7:17 pm

Esperanto?

It would be most efficient to choose the most commonly used language. Is that Mandarin? It would minimize education costs while implementing.

And Stella's a woman's beer. GET THE MAN A KEITH'S!!! [B-o]

EyeBrock @ Mon Nov 08, 2010 7:20 pm

Keith's might be ok for you half-Jock types. No offence intended (I'm fibbing). I like a beer that's got a decent heritage of taste. 1367 AD and all that! Besides, Boddingtons is a better real beer than Keith's, by far!

I do like old world brews. Tennents is amazing. Guinness, of course. Picked up a taste for Kronenberg when I lived in France briefly. Heineken is almost a gold-standard. I do enjoy all the European beers I've tried (including Stella). But if I'm fixing to put down a dozen or more, I want something SMOOOOOOOTH. Alexander Keith's, Moosehead or Miller Genuine Draft.

GreenTiger @ Mon Nov 08, 2010 8:16 pm

English is our National National Language, while I may be perceived as liberal is some areas I'm not when it comes to that. If you live in my country learn English.

My grandmother refused to teach my father the "old" language. She said you are American you will speak English.

you guys are nuts. :)

Money makes the world go round, and money speaks English, even the Chinese know that.

French USED to be the world language of international diplomacy,
sport and blah blah.
France USED to be one of the major Powers in the world.

It changed.

For whatever reason, the Olympic Committee hasnt seen fit to put the Frenchies
back in their place.

Bodah @ Tue Nov 09, 2010 4:44 am

Might as well locked up the thread. Since the OP has been deleted. The subject is lost and its being painted as anti-French across the board when that wasn't the point at all. Before this thread turns to shit.

Have a good one folks.
