CubanTexan CubanTexan:
Martin Luther King is the greatest American of the 20th century.
JFK IS THE MOST OVERRATED!

JFK? Overrated? I don’t think that’s entirely accurate. He’s untimely death and subsequent martyrdom mythologized his legacy, but I don’t think that classifies him as the most overrated leader in history. What about the Cuban Missile Crisis? Isn’t that a political science case study for effective anti-realpolitik decision-making?

When I think of JFK I am unable to dispell my predelictions concerning the outcome of the 'Bay of Pigs' fiasco. I had an uncle die in that assualt.
I’m sorry about your uncle’s death. If this is too personal, I can certainly respect your wishes if you don’t want to talk about JFK any further. I’m interested in historical debate, but not at the expense of someone’s personal loss. Your call.

Whats wrong with Tommy Douglas? Tommy was a great man who developed many of the principles in health care that are examples of what every country should have.
How can you defend a man like Mike Harris? He left the province more fucked up then when he came in.
But I will agree with you on the Rene Levesque.

Not at all. I'm wise enough to know the difference between a bias and a well thought-out opinion. With JFK, it is very difficult for me to view him without bias. But, his family made their money bootlegging, Joe Kennedy was a tyrant without scruples. Ted Kennedy is an embarassment. I'm sorry. I'm ranting, I dislike the Kennedy's, I know too much of their history.

Fair enough. But while Kennedy’s family does possess some rather unscrupulous (which isn’t really relevant to the salient point) actions (which leader, by the way, is ethically and morally perfect?) it still doesn’t alter his actions during arguably the Cold War’s most dangerous confrontation. I’m interested in seeing how you can illustrate that JFK’s anti-realpolitik actions weren’t a case study in successful decision-making and leadership.

I would agree JFK is overrated. As for the most overrated leader in history...Julius Ceasar.

Funny comment but lets get this back onto topic before it bcomes a slam session. --GA-FuBaR
Thats not funny

Yes, it is Augustus Caesar's greatness that should be overshadowing Julius- not the other way around.
Caesar's conquests are rather impressive, though.
Mustang, ok, I will agree that JFK's handling of the Cuban Missile crisis was deftly handled, and should be studied, but that one incident (though a big one!) should not define the man.

Your just pissed at JFK cause he could have cared less about Cuba and their sandwiches and fake espresso cofee.

3. Gordon Campbell: Amazingly turned BC from a disaster to an Oasis in 4 years. In what has to be a mind-numbing decision by BC voters...he still lost half his MP's in the last election.
I'll leave the other leaders to people that know them better, but as for Gordon Campbell I am a big fan. However, he did need to be brought under control a little. He sold off BC Rail which he promised not to do, he sold off BC Ferries, and he tried to sell off the Coquihalla highway. I think some people were getting a little wary of what he would try to sell next. I'm just thankfull for the way he's turned the economy around. Good job Gordo.

Godz46 Godz46:
Every single democratic president after Thomas Jefferson.
My other nominees:
1.Quebec's Rene Levesque (despite what the seperatists say, he began Quebec's downword spiral, turning it from a world class Province to a socialist shithole). Considered as some kind of Prophet to French-Canadian seperatists.
2. Pierre Eliotte Trudeau (decimated Canada's once proud military, and divided Canadians more than any other leader, yet is seen as some kind of prophetic icon).
3. Jacques Chirac ("Le Worm", one of the most caniving leaders in the world) Seen as the leader of the socialist world.
4. Tommy Douglas (NOT DEAD ENOUGH!!!!) Need I say more?
5. Yasser Arafat: Father of modern day Arab terrorism: Helped train FLQ terrorists in the October Crisis, murdered thousands of innocent civilians, destroyed Lebanon. Praised as some kind of Liberator by the Left.
Leaders who don't get enough credit:
1. Ronald Reagan: Defeated Communism, his actions helped liberate Eastern Europe from the Tyranny of the USSR. Restored integrity in US military. Brought the longest period of prosperity in the US. Liberals mock his illness to this day.
2. Ralph Klein: Debt free Province, lowest Unemployment, fastest Growing economic power in North America, took the necessary steps to make it so. Yet still gets bashed by Ottawa every 5 seconds.
3. Gordon Campbell: Amazingly turned BC from a disaster to an Oasis in 4 years. In what has to be a mind-numbing decision by BC voters...he still lost half his MP's in the last election.
4. Mike Harris: Defied all expectations. Just like he said, gave people off the knees from welfare got them into job markets. Improved economy. Made necessary changes that prevented Ontario from disaster. His resulsts would have been more apparent, but Bob Rae really fucked things up pretty bad before him. Demonized by the lefty loonies as some kind of vampire who bites heads off puppies.
Campbell did good you gotta remember all the union members in BC went out and voted NDP. I like Campbell but hope nothing else gets sold off
