EyeBrock EyeBrock:
The Imam didn't. The Toronto Public School Board didn't and this separation of females/menstruating females from males happens in every mosque and madrassa in Canada.

What they do in their churches is their business. I believe some Jewish sects also segregate males from females.

But in public schools there should be no endorsement of particular religions. IF the kids want to go pray, let them go to a mosque and make up the lessons they missed on their own time.

If those 'churches' are supported by registered charities with tax exemptions then the misogynistic practices they perpetuate is our business.

Turning a blind eye to young Canadian women being treated this way may sit well with you andy, but I think it’s outrageous to allow this stuff to go on.

And people moan about Rob Ford not going to Pride.

“As a public school board, we have a responsibility and an obligation to accommodate faith needs.”

As long as it's not Christian or Catholic. Any other faith such as Muslim, well that's a different story.

Discrimination doesn't stop at the doors to a Church.

Your guys don't allow women to become priests. Also misogynistic. As I've said, the more conservative Jews also segregate the women - good luck going after that one. You want to start applying human rights laws to religions, you're opening a can of worms.

It just highlights why it's all a load of crap.

You guys? To whom are you addressing andy? Pope Eyebrock?

Are the Jews claiming tax exemptions and running synagogues in Toronto schools? I think not. As usual you miss the point.

There is a difference between what happens in a church, and what happens in public reference faith.

In church, anything goes with regards to religious practices. I don't give a fuck.

In the public space, I think religion should be freely expressed, save for potentially threatening, dangerous, or demeaning practices such as this.

In government and government run institutions, anything but the most minor of religious practices should be banned both for public safety and for human rights. No ceremonial knives, face covering clothing, segregation based on menstral cycles, etc.

It's difficult to say when the Canadian population will reject these and other issues of accomodation. Irrespective of when we hit that period, one needs the political will to change the Charter, if that is even possible.

Otherwise, it's just a bunch of cranks on an internet forum.

The education act does say, "a board shall not permit any person to conduct religious exercises or to provide instruction that includes indoctrination in a particular religion or religious belief in a school." I guess this is heading towards a Charter case.

Well, I guess the TSBD lawyers didn't read that part.

Charter cases need money, wonder who will pony up.

And, as usual, the HRC ? .. nowhere to be seen when Islam is involved.

sandorski @ Tue Jul 12, 2011 11:31 pm

I'll just point out that calling this "Middle Ages" is inaccurate. This kind of belief/practice is straight from the Old Testament, the same Old Testament many Christians consider the inerrant "Word of God". Fortunately most Christians see those practices for what they are, but some still cling to the sentiments that are at the root of these practices.

I think you've got yourself seriously twisted here, and are missing your own point. You guys refers to Catholics. I'm sure orthodox Jews enjoy the same tax exempt status as Muslims. And you responded to me saying what they do in their own "churches" is their own affair, and you said we should intervene there too. Has nothing to do with what they do in school - as I said, they shouldn't even be holding this service in the school.

For reference:

Actually the Muslims who want prayer in school would have to launch as charter case, since they would claim their religious rights are infringed. I'm sure they would have no problem getting funding for that.

And the HRC - somebody has to complain for them to get involved. And again it would have to be the pro prayer Muslims if this prayer is now shut down. Or other faith groups who are denied the same privilege.

I agree within limits (no clit cutting etc).
