Religion has no place in public school
I think he's against whatever the educated majority say.
Canadian_Mind Canadian_Mind:
I'm with Brock on this one Andy, whether deliberate or not, you missed his point entirely.
It's a common trend.
If all else fails, it'll turn into a conversation about the hardship of being a Timmies worker.

So what is it you claim I'm against? If you want to take away tax exemptions from all religions, I agree with that. If you want to do it on some selective basis, because "Muslims are against human rights, but Catholics and Orthodox Jews aren't" then I'm against that, yes. Treat them all the same.
But you've bullshitted your way thru this where you probably don't even know what your position is. Claiming that I misquoted you when I obviously didn't, and the people falling in line to "agree" with you would know that if they bothered to check.
You still here andy?

The Imam didn't. The Toronto Public School Board didn't and this separation of females/menstruating females from males happens in every mosque and madrassa in Canada.
What they do in their churches is their business. I believe some Jewish sects also segregate males from females.
Ever been to a hutterite colony?

There's still more beating to do. He'll be here for a while.

Nope. What sort of tax breaks do they get?
I'm sure there are all sorts of human rights violations going on in religious groups. It would certainly be opening a can of worms to try to make them all reform those.
Rather than put words in the school administrators (teachers, janitors, passers-by or whomever) that they turned a blind eye to the rampant discrimination, shouldn't we also ask WHY they turned a blind eye to this whole thing?
The fact that girls were discriminated against, while horrible, only comes about because nobody said no to religion creeping into school at all. Why did nobody say anything?
It's a very good point Dayseed.
How did it get to this in at least 10 Toronto schools?

I think this forum has pretty well answered that question by now. It's the pc mania that is actually a form of racism - "they" need their special rights while "we" get the opposite. So if a Christian group had set up this sort of thing there would be howling from the same people who thought this was a good idea for the Muslims. If these kids need to be off praying every Friday afternoon for up to an hour, how will they ever hold a job when they graduate? I guess by going to the HRC and complaining about discrimination if their employer doesn't grant them the time off.
Segregation of girls from boys is not the issue. This wouldn't be OK even if they mixed girls and boys. Religious services don't belong in schools. Plenty of religions segregate male from female, or discriminate in other ways. Many private and even some public schools do the same.
I, for one, am outraged.
I'm sorry, what were we talking about?
The school is quite clear--this is a required accomodation due to Constitutional protected freedom of religion, which supercedes the Education Act. As to the issue of gender separation, they state that they don't tell people how to pray.
They are all about tolerance at TDSB. Unless you're a Christian.

If somebody blames "PC run amok", normally I don't agree with that, but in this case, it certainly is a viable explanation.
Political correctness is still a valuable doctrine for ostracizing discriminating behaviour. The whole point of it was that society ought to discourage the use of slurs in public discourse. There's simply no utilitarian value in dropping n-bombs in casual conversation nor is anybody actually enriched by calling somebody a kike.
In other words, political correctness has a point and a value.
BUT, if that same doctrine
prevents or inhibits people from standing up and pointing out
blatant discrimination because they're scared of that ostracizing, then we've got to go back to basic societal education.
1. It's not okay to call somebody a carpet rider or camel jockey.
2. It's also not okay to watch that somebody isolate menstruating girls as unclean.
THIS GOES QUADRUPLE IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL3. It's not okay to refer to all priests as kid-diddlers.
4. It's also not okay to hide kid-diddlers from the police in neighbouring parishes.
5. It's not okay to call lesbians bull-dykes.
6. It's also not okay to prevent them from getting married.
7. It's not okay to call Sikhs ragheads.
8. It's also not okay to not factor in "honour killing" at murder trials of teenage girls who had the audacity to hold a boy's hand.
See how simple this really is? So why do we all get points 1, 3, 5 and 7 but 2, 4, 6 and 8 are head-scratchers?
andyt @ Thu Jul 14, 2011 11:27 am
Do you really want to make this about menstruating girls? So if they let those girls mingle with the others, this would be OK? Or if they integrated girls and boys, then having these services in school during school hours would be OK? Don't know why people are so hung up on that part. Having religious services in school during school hours is not OK - straight forward. Or, if accommodation is required, then accommodate anybody and everybody who asks, if you think that's a good idea.

I guess that's the politics of PC. You win the arguent by presenting yourself as even a bigger victim.
I also note that the Toronto Distrcit School Board has a special day to celebrate Pink. Why am I not surprised.
andyt @ Thu Jul 14, 2011 11:42 am
You saying Brock and Dayseed are presenting themselves as victims? Or victim's advocates I guess. Oh, how could I turn such a blind eye to discrimination by suggesting this shouldn't happen on school property during school hours, no matter if menstruation is involved.
Next up - orthodox Jews can't have sex with their wives while the wives are menstruating. So we'll accommodate them having sex in schools as long as they stop such a discriminatory practice.
