I feel I need to reply to Beckie's post.
What I mean to say is that there are peopel who accept truths they are given and there are those who find their own truth. In my onw example, I don't just read one paper, I read the Vancouver Sun, The Globe and Mail and on the internet I check out CNN, CBC, BBC, and the Guardian for news. This way I can get a variety of opinions on a news story and make my informed opinion. I know I'm know I'm not the only person who does this.
But if you look at the US, the majority of people get their news from FOX "News" and only 17% of people read a newspaper for its content not its horoscopes or car ads.
As for my opinion on George W, I do hate him. I hate how he stole the presidency, I hate how he has turned the US into a pariah among nations, I hate how he is the antithesis of the ideals of the founding fathers, I hate his policies (such as a massive deficit causing tax cut in the middle of what could easily be a prolonged war defies logic), and I hate how someone like him can get votes. You can see the lack of intelligence in his speeches and the fact that he rarely holds a press conference. He is easily the worst president in US history. And I am not the only person who feels this way.
As for US troops, I have no quarrel with them, they are simply following orders. "Theirs is not to reason why, their is but to fight and die".
Which Bush speeches will go down in history, Becks? The ones where he lied to the American people and the world in order to start an illegal war? The ones where he defended trying to evade both US domestic law and international by shipping POWs to Guantanamo? The ones where he unilaterally broke long-standing treaties so he could give some corporate welfare to the arms industry? How about the ones where he decided that money was more important than the environment, people, and the future?
Bush is a bad, bad man, Becks. He has taken a democracy and turned it into a corporate run sham that is quickly heading for bankruptcy. Look at the record, not the rhetoric.
To put Beckie's views in perspective, understand that there were people in this country who supported Nixon and Kissinger. There are even educated, decent folks presently that think Hitler was given a bum rap and was actually an OK kinda guy.Even after the release of the pentagon papers,LBJ still had his supporters who were saying North Vietnam should be destroyed by nuclear weapons ( even if it meant contaiminating South Vietnam).
The point is, no matter how evil, stupid, corrupt, and dangerous some leaders are - they will always have supporters somewhere. And fortunately they are usually in the minority, or come to their senses once the facts come to light. It's just an opinion, but I think the Texas chimp's days are numbered based on the polls down here. Roughly 50% of the population is getting fed up with his foreign and domestic failures. Eventually it all comes out in the wash.
I totally have to agree with Buford here. Bush's reign of stupidity cannot last forever. The only hope for the fate of the world is if he loses the next election.
Buford's also right that there are always people who stand by some of the worst people. Especially the people who feel Hitler is misunderstood. I agree with that because I know some of those people.
Beckie, I realize that you hold Bush in high regard, but he has not made the mos difficult decisions ever. He has made the easiest ones. And by this I mean he has taken the easy way out. A courageous thing to say would have been "we [the world] need to move forward with unity to fight the forces of fanaticism and terrorism." Instead we got "You are either with us or against us," and we got encouragements to keep buying things.
I am sure that his speeches will go down in history all right, but as examples of what a horrible president he was.

"Of course people don't want to go to war. Why would some ppor slob on his farm want to go fight when all he could possibly get out of it is to come back in one piece?...It is the leaders of a country who determine policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along...It's easy. All you have to do is tell the people they are being attacked and then denounce the pacifists for the lack of patriotism and for giving comfort to the enemy. It works the smae in every country. - Hermann Goering
I thought this was interesting.
Bush leads all Democrats in poll
Lieberman fares best among declared foes in national survey
ASSOCIATED PRESS
HAMDEN, Conn., Sept. 17 — President Bush leads all Democratic challengers — and even some who have not entered the 2004 presidential race — in a national poll released Wednesday.
THE QUINNIPIAC University Polling Institute found that Bush outdistanced his rivals by at least 10 points or more in the survey conducted Sept. 11-15.
Bush was favored 52-41 percent over Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, 51-39 percent over Rep. Dick Gephardt of Missouri and 53-38 percent over former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean and Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts.
The president also easily bested two Democrats not in the race — former Vice President Al Gore, Bush’s opponent in 2000, and New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. Bush was favored 53-41 percent over Gore, and 52-42 percent over the former first lady.
The survey was not all good news for the president. Sixty-seven percent of those polled said the economy will matter more to them than the U.S.-led war against Iraq when they go to the voting booth in November 2004.
Fifty percent of those surveyed disapprove of the way Bush has handled the economy, while 44 percent approve. Voters, by a 49-42 percent margin, said that a Democratic administration would do a better job.
Those polled supported the war 58-37 percent, but they are evenly split on the $87 billion price tag.
The poll surveyed 1,228 registered voters nationwide by telephone. It had a margin of error of plus or minus of 3 percentage points.
DEADLOCK IN IOWA
A poll released Monday found Dean and Gephardt deadlocked at the top of the Democratic pack in Iowa, which will hodl presidential caucuses on Jan. 19.
Dean, the former Vermont governor, and Gephardt, the Missouri congressman, each received 19 percent support, with Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts at 10 percent, in the poll. All three were overshadowed by the 36 percent who said they have not made up their minds about the then nine candidates seeking the partyÂ’s nomination.
(Over the past two days, a tenth candidate, retired general Wesley Clark has thrown his hat into the race.)
Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina and Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut each had 6 percent, while the rest of the field was at 1 percent.
The poll was commissioned by Davenport, Iowa, television station KWQC and the Davenport-based newspaper chain Lee Enterprises. The telephone survey, conducted by PMR Inc., a Davenport research firm, was taken Aug. 26-Sept. 6 among 400 registered Democrats and independents who said they were likely to attend precinct caucuses.
The survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.

Agreed, economically he need to get with it.
Sharpton makes me nervous
Beckie,
This is ONE american that LOVES Canada. For reasons to numerous to mention. But, coffee crisp, Gord Lightfoot, peameale, poutine, Gretzke (sp), Ontario lakes, And Barrie water, and by the way, thanks for bringing our embassy folks out of Iran when our embassy was overertaken, yes I remember and remind my countrymen every chance I get. Not to mention Molson CANADIAN!!!.
My truck bears a large red maple leaf and I only wish we enjoyed the respect that you now have, and we have somehow lost.
I feel that Canada is now what we once were.
Regarding Bush, the last election the democratic vote was largely divided by Ralph Nader's Green Party. This time I hope it will be different, the 12 million or so votes he siphoned off Al Gore will not waste their votes on a "statement", in addition to the military vote which he has lost due to un-fair cuts in vetrans and service mens benefits. Also many democrats who thought Gore had it "sewn up" will make thier way to the polls next year.
But, if I am wrong and the republicans are victorious next year......
please
please
Remember this post and have mercy on the poor bedraggled masses that would like to respect your laws, love your land as our own, and become Canadians.
With much respect and just a little "Canadian Mist" buzz,
Intriguer
Hey, maybe you can give Buford a lift up here in your truck, Intriguer. I really think we can save this country if we keep it out of the claws of the guys who screwed yours up and I'm all for opening our Canadian arms to foreigners trying to escape repressive regimes at home. If you come to Winnipeg I'll even buy a Molson Canadian.
I'm sure if Buford wanted to live in Canada, he would be making every effort in that regard.
Intriguer, I also like many things about canada, including Labatts , but it is frightening to think what direction the states would have gone, should Gore have become President.
Say, Intriguer - I just gotta ask:
Does it feel just a little creepy today, to be living in a place called "Hurricane, West Virginia"?
Cigarettes ... Cigars
"I did not have sexual relations with that that that >>>woman, whats her name again ?"
Buford, Clinton had his shot at Osama and his Top guns, and he missed. So I guess it all depends on what the word 'is' is
Canada is not a horrible country, it is run by a horrible little dictator.

So fat boy got a hummer and lied , so he found a unique way of humidifying his cigar - SO WHAT !! Alpha males (world leaders) have been lying aboot getting some on the side for along time - FDR did it, so did Kennedy,Jefferson , and probably hundreds of other world leaders since the beginning of time. Bush's lies and failures have caused DEATH AND DESTRUCTION AND SUFFERING - are you keepin' up with current events?
I couldn't give a frog's fat ass what was on Monica Lewinsky's dress - I DO care that soldiers are dying, innocents are still getting killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, that more poor people are out on the streets here in the richest country in the world, that we still can't get answers on exactly WHY 9/11 wasn't prevented, why millions are losing their jobs, why the Saudis are being protected, why North Korea's threats to turn Seoul into a "lake of fire" is viewed as a problem that can be solved diplomatically - whereas Iraq had to be invaded RIGHT NOW, as well as a dozen other questions.
Buford, Clinton had his shot at Osama and his Top guns
Bush ain't doin' too much better, last I heard , the tall bearded one was still hiding out' making tapes just like Sadam, although maybe Sadam and Osama will turn up right before the election
Canada is not a horrible country, it is run by a horrible little dictator.
Yes , when I think of evil and terrible destruction and suffering -I think of Jean and his gang - My god , How can you stand to live up there in Canada. Just curious, aside from cutting back on the military, and wasting tax money - ( Which all governments do ), what has the Canadian government done to the country that is so bad ? And if it's that bad , at least you can vote them out. Down here , we supposedly have a problem with our voting machines which prevents the election of the majority's wishes - so we install the runner - up as president.
