He's an advocate for a cause, you don't get very far in that capacity by staying at home.

You do that, just be sure to leave your itinerary. I'm sure there are a few people who would be interested in hearing you speak... after they arrest you.
Despite being obviously intended as sarcasm the methodology you suggest only works if people can see the benefits through a demonstration (AKA: To use your example, the bus with you demonstrated bad habits in person). That generally means someone has to show them it's possible. There are all sorts of interesting examples of how this is and can be done but since the structures and people aren't as portable as video and audio you still need an advocate to carry the message and explain it if your message is going to reach the decision makers. Suzuki's celebrity, like it or not, opens doors. Since he's already known for being able to articulate complex scientific subject matter in understandable ways it's a good pairing, that's why people like myself listen when he speaks.
He's still human and can get a little carried away at times when frustration sets in but who can blame him when it seems like nobody is listening.
