Five MPD Officers fired after Nichols investigation

$1:
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police announced the five MPD officers involved in the arrest of Tyre Nichols have been fired. The following officers have been terminated: Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith.

Memphis Police posted this statement to Twitter as well as Facebook and provided the following photos.

“The Memphis Police Department has concluded its administrative investigation into the tragic death of Mr. Tyre Nichols. After a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding this incident, we have determined that five (5) MPD officers violated multiple department policies, including excessive use of force, duty to intervene, and duty to render aid.

Earlier today, each officer charged was terminated from the Memphis Police Department. The Memphis Police Department is committed to protecting and defending the rights of every citizen in our city. The egregious nature of this incident is not a reflection of the good work that our officers perform, with integrity, every day.” – Chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis, Memphis Police.

Here’s what we know about the case right now:

On Jan. 7, MPD says officers stopped Tyre Nichols for “reckless driving” near Raines and Ross Road in Hickory Hill. Police say as they approached him, a “confrontation” occurred, and he took off running. After a pursuit, officers claim another “confrontation” occurred before taking Nichols into custody.
Family says the second confrontation happened on Castlegate Lane, just yards from where he lived and under a SkyCop camera.
Police say Nichols then complained of “shortness of breath” and was taken to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition.
Nichols’ family says the incident made him go into cardiac arrest, left him with a broken neck and he suffered from other medical issues.
On Jan. 10, he died in the hospital.

Beau just put out a video saying he's waiting too, because information he has says it's really bad. Like, we've seen some shit these last years, but this will raise the bar.

5 fired Memphis police officers charged with murder in death of Black man following traffic stop

The fact that the officers were fired right away and now charged so quickly probably speaks to how bad the video truly is and how badly the Memphis PD wants to get ahead of the story. The video is supposed to be released today.

The videos have been released. I won’t link to them but they can be easily found.

…And they’re as bad as we’d been led to believe. Those five cops beat that man to death without remorse.

No surprise... protests have erupted in many cities in the USA. It's going to be an ugly night.

I’m always of two minds about that sort of thing. On the one hand protests rarely ever achieve anything, especially if they turn destructive (and despite the fact that it’s the police that instigate confrontations the most during protests).

But on the other hand. What other recourse is there? Last year was the worst year ever in the US for people being killed by cops; nearly 2000. Nothing is changing. These five cops all had body cameras on and they still killed that poor man because they fully expected to get away with it. Hence the choir practice at the end of the videos getting their stories straight.

The people of France shut their country down last week because the government wants to raise the retirement age by two years. There’s no reason Americans should do any less in the face of a thrill kill by the police that are supposed to “protect and serve.”

Wasn't that the whole reason for 'black lives matter'? What did it get them but a reprieve? If anything the lunatic fringe on the right points to that as a reason to crack down even harder.

Till the right wing returns to sanity this is only going to get worse. That isn't in the cards till the trumpians are removed from power and that may take decades.

Yeah. And to reform the police will take even longer. The institutionalized racism and siege mentality drilled into every police recruit will require a revolution to change and generations to overcome. It’s a Herculean effort just to start it and will always fall short because there’s a certain subset of society that gets off on police killing people in the name of law and order.
