The grand pubah of populist grassroots warned them. They should have listened.

How was the grassroots revival of the 90s in Alberta . . . racist?

Ask Preston Manning, he said it not me. I didn't even read his book, I'm just aware of the quote. It seems like he's not saying it was racist, just that without considerable restraint a lot of the things an Alberta populist grassroots movement might do or say would sound racist and extremist.

Only in the media. I saw you in another thread referring to the Reform Party and using the 'racist' moniker. It's funny, one guy makes an offhanded remark, one Liberal MP starts ranting about it and that colours Alberta politics for decades. Whenever I ask someone to come up with a second example of the 'racist' Reform Party, that usually where the conversation ends.

Preston Manning is also the person responsible for starting the grassroots Green Conservative movement, but they rarely get accused of being racist or extremeist.

I did? I would say the closer you get to cowboy hats, rodeos, and Rob Anders the chances of encountering a racist increase exponentially. That's about as far as I'd go in calling the Reform party racist.

It is hilarious, because the soldiers with guns thing goes on to this day, and it wasn't even anyone in the Liberal party that made the stupid video.

Way to keep making friends! I recall from a recent poll that many CKAers hail from Alberta. I'll bet they love being called racists as much as I do!

By the way, did you know the first Mosque in North America was build in Alberta? How about the first all black community? Have many Muslim mayors in the RoC?

Guns? Video?

Whoa now.

I seem to recall things in Alberta running fairly well when the RoC considers us racist rednecks.

Let's keep it that way.

The PC's aren't up against any other party so much as they are up against their own history!

“In recent years, Albertans have witnessed bullying and intimidation of school boards, municipalities, doctors and hospital staff, massive cabinet pay raises awarded behind closed doors, million-dollar severance payoffs for retiring ministers, health care queue-jumping by insiders, vote-buying and influence-peddling by leadership contenders, extra pay for do-nothing committee jobs, and illegal donations to the PC Party from municipalities, universities, and other public agencies that receive government funding.

This is exactly why I'm voting Wildrose!

Starting with the atempted infiltration by the racist Canadian Heritage Party, Manning had the devil's own time keeping the genuine nuts out of the Reform movement. I don't know, and I also highly doubt, that Danielle Smith has the strength to do the same with some of the bigotted cretins and theo-fundamentalists that have already manuevered themselves into influential positions in the Wildrose.

Like Raj Sherman sort of said, we're about to find out if this is still Alberta or if it's gonna be turned into Alabama. :|

Did not. I called some prominent members of the Wildrose religious bigots and homophobes. Racist never even came up.

Yogi @ Tue Apr 10, 2012 6:05 pm

The obvious question which no one seems too interested in asking is "WHY are former PC members now members of the Wildrose Party"? To which I would answer "Obviously, because they are at least as disillusined with the PC party as the electorate, if not more so, and they have seen a lot more than the electorate is likely to ever know about"!

Or it could be that they're in the pockets of the oil companies, and when Stelmach started the royalty reviews they saw all their cushy post-politics "consulting" jobs flying out the window.

Not saying that I neccesarily believe that, but it is a theory...

I just really hope the Liberals or Alberta arty can do something to make themselves worth voting for, cause the other two parties sure aren't.

In the end, one doesn't know until you give them a shot. With luck they won't as disappointing as the CPC is so far.

Yup, for sure! I'm not saying i'm going to vote WR for the rest of my days, but give the WR and chance and show the PC's that they are going to have to work for their jobs and not take their jobs for granted.

Exactly. After forty years of taking the electorate for granted, reverting to the opposition will be good for them.

Not only that, but the Wildrose MLAs were all pretty much small fish in the PC caucus, so they could be looking for big promotions (to the more important portfolios like Health and Education) if the Wildrose forms the government.

I had high hopes for the Alberta Party after they added Mayor Nenshi's campaign manager to the team last year, but he hasn't been able to get anything going for them. The Liberals under Sherman are a disaster, trotting out stereotypes and radicalism not seen in provincial politics in a long time.

Frankly, it's too bad Mason is NDP - if he was the leader of any other party, I'd vote for him.

Mason's still the most level headed and believable one of the lot. He'll be getting my vote. I'm just hoping the vote splitting on the right allows for more left of center seats this election. Of course there's just as much if not more of that on the left too so who knows.

At this point, I'mthinking minority government might be the way to go. I don't actualy trust any of the parties with the full reins of power. A few years where the winner has to govern with a bit of humility and where the opposition parties can raise their profile's a bit might be a good thing.
