I hear George is sending another three battalions of the poor to Iraq to get them off the welfare rolls. It is certainly a much better system than we have here in Canada where we give them welfare until it is time for them to collect the old age pension. With any luck he will get rid of several thousand before the outcry from the American public becomes intolerable. He's done so well at not finding Saddam or Osama as well as failing to locate weapons of mass destruction. I wonder what he will fail beautifully at next?

Hmmm... He's sending welfare recipients into a dangerous cobat zone. I'm saying this tongue in cheek, but that sure is an interesting way to deal with poverty numbers.

Between here in Pennsylvania and my time in Florida and a short 6-month stint in Minnesota, I have never heard anything bad or intolerable being said about Canadians. Worst-case scenario, I have had to put up with an igloo or an indoor plumbing joke. Nothing compared to what she had to put with. The worse part of it all was that I didn't even realize how bad

Well, bossdog, I can sure point you to ONE American Forum where plenty of it goes on - It's only a few folks out of an otherwise nice site, with sevetral Canadians in it, but those few delight in describing us and our country wth terms like "Vile Socialist filth" who "ride on America's shirt-tail and never pick up their end." - one of them this summer ranted that our Military "are all a bunch of cowards, EVERY ONE OF THEM!"

Let me know, and I can post the addy, or PM it to you....

Tman1 @ Fri Sep 30, 2005 8:26 pm

Funny how people complain about Canadians bashing Americans but when vice versa occurs....silence is not golden. Those Igloo and indoor plumbing jokes aren't even jokes, it's plain stupidity trying to hide behind a joke.

Tman1 - if you are truly objective - vice a versa my friend. Born, bred and served as a Canadian and I can still see our shortcomings when it comes to our closest neighbour compared to theirs on us.

Starting to sound like an "apologist" to me - why didn't you even comment on my post, bossdog?

Sure, if they agree to back off with the "When can we invade Canada?" comments.

they'd have to find us on a map first. ever notice how most of their maps stop dead at the border?

Non-rev, I know whereof you speak and you are spot on.

I get more hot and bothered by them that says -: eek: place to visit, they're not like us., they don't gush courtesies (y'all drop by sometime), so they're rude. not all their roads are like our interstates   Their 'actors' at living history spots don't stay in character every second. Those of you who know the spot where this happens most often, know I tend to post a remember you're visitors thingy in a tone of "I don't have to take this."

As tman1 says:

Now, being a dual, & having lots of U.S. contacts, maybe I hear more like non-rev does. Believe me I hear lots.

The problem is that politically and socially, over the past 40 years or so Canada has moved to the left, at the same time in the US the mainstream has become the right or right of centre.
While Canada continues it’s journey left, supported by our Quebec orientated ruling classes, it is obvious that our two nations and political systems will have less in common.

Our social direction in most matters is at odds with mainstream views in the US such as gay marriage, gun control, social programmes etc.
Add that in with the US geo-politics of military intervention, which smarts at the very core of Quebec’s long held isolationist views, and the fact that most of our politicos in power as well as our Federal Civil Service are French-Quebeckers, it is no wonder that Canadians appear to have major differences on every level with our US neighbours.

At this moment in our history our main leaders in Ottawa are left leaning at best, at worst they are isolationists more interested in appeasing a sizeable minority population in Quebec, a population that have maintained their stance since they were conquered in 1759.
The average Stephane Dion or Pierre Pettigrew have no love of the US and are products of an elitist school of thought in New France that looks inward at the Québécois struggle and outward to France for it’s social direction.

These are the forces at play in modern Canada, it is no big surprise that we have differences of opinion with the US. We are socially on a different planet.

This lack of commonality is breeding hostility, especially in Canada, where the slightest issue becomes an excuse to show the US in a negative light. This casting the US as the villain plays well to the majority of Quebeckers, including our political hierarchy, and is jolly good stuff for the media and our left leaning population in most of the provinces.
I’m not blaming Quebec for all that ails us but they are a major influence on our social and political policies, especially with the majority of our civil service being from Quebec.

Those who have spent anytime in Ottawa can not help but notice that French is the language of choice in the corridors of power and in the myriad of govt. depts. in Ottawa and Gatineau across the river. The “Crown” corporations are run out of Quebec, the Military officer class above major have to be bi-lingual which has ensured the hierarchy are mainly from Quebec as are most of the DND civil servants. This orientation to Quebec has had an impact on the direction of Canada. Our bad guy is now “Les Anglais” in the US.
The yanks have replaced the British Empire ( so efficiently erased from Canada since the 1960’s) as the Evil Empire that imposes it's Anglo way of life on the world.

Having a bad guy to bash every night is great TV and great for the polls. It takes the heat of our own inept governments. Even our ambassador to the US is getting in the act, very diplomatic. Must be an election coming.

These are my views on why bashing the yanks is as popular as hockey in Canada.

I will await the usual tirades for having an opinion.

Ah, ah, ah, eyebrock, minor detail, I have to mention. It's called bottom liners, ya know, people like the PM, Minister of Finance.......

Rather right of right leaning that lot.....

Like I think $ have something to do with level of service...

;)

EyeBrock @ Sat Oct 01, 2005 8:21 am

The PM right leaning? Er, Paul Martin? The famous right wing Paul Martin?

LittleKopit @ Sat Oct 01, 2005 8:22 am

So why do you question that budget bottom liners are right?

:)

Thats it folks, no more American bashing.. Let he who is with out sin cast the first stone. We sit here and pass judgment on another country when we should be trying to do something about fixing OUR OWN COUNTRIES PROBLEMS.. So any more American bashing I see will be deleted, no ifs ands or buts...

Back to the original topic, I think this is a great idea. We don't realize how much bashing we really do. When I was attached from CFJSR to USCENTCOM in Florida (I know, tough gig), I met my wife. She came back with me to Canada for about 18 months and she had never felt more uncomfortable in her life. I was embarrassed by how much "anti-Americanism" had become a part of our national lifestyle. What really hurt her, were the small, everyday comments about the "stupid Americans".

Now, I'm down in the US living with her. The worse part of it all was that I didn't even realize how bad it (US bashing in Canada) was because it had become such a normal part of our lives.

Food for thought - nothing more, nothing less.
So your wife is thin skinned?

How about we stop bashing Americans when their Marine Corps colour guard learns to hold our flag upright at baseball games and Americans stop butchering our national anthem.
Or when the Americans have a presidential candidate that actually knows the name of the Canadian Prime Minister at the time.
Jean Poutine and George Bush ring any bells?
