The ice in a glass example is a gross example that overlooks some aspects of mass. It does not take in to account the expansion of sea water as the oceans warm, the effect of retreating permafrost underground and melting of ice over land. With millions of tons of ice and water that effect is amplified. Also, the ice that is melting is fresh water and that will also add to the mass.
The melting of the North pole is a harbinger of things to come. Once it is gone Greenland and the South Pole can not be that far behind. Melting of the Greenland ice sheet would produce 7.2 m of sea level rise, and melting of the Antarctic ice sheet would produce 61.1 m of sea level rise. Source
Since 1992 the TOPEX and JASON satellite programs have provided measurements of sea level change.
The data show a mean sea level increase of 2.9±0.4 mm/yr.
Since 1993, the TOPEX/POSEIDON satellite radars found that Tuvalu's sea levels have fallen four inches over a decade.
There are clear indications of a recent fall in the Maldives sea level. Nils axel morner led a research team that concluded that the sea level "experienced a general fall of the order of 20-30 cm" since 1970. The most surprising finding was that the Indian Ocean was higher than today between 1900 and 1970 and that sea level has fallen since then..........

Honestly, you people still denying climate change? What planet are you on? I take it you're not on the same planet where the rains are persistently failing or coming irregularly in Africa? I take it you're not on the same planet as Spain, where persistent droughts are now causing unprecedented levels of forest fires every summer. Are you on a different planet to the UK, where we've had the hottest April since records began more than 300 years ago? (It was 25 degrees C the other day. Average April temperature is 11 degrees.) Earth to Sasquatch, hellooo!
Now, I agree that the Tories' plan is better than the Libs, who did little or nothing at a time when the issue still seemed like a distant problem for somebody else to deal with. But the climate, both political and literal, has changed. If the government are going to step up to the plate and finally admit that climate change is a real problem, then they need to act like proper statesmen and really address the issue. Not use this as an excuse for infantile party politics and fingerpointing excuses yet again.
I think Gore, Suzuki and yes, the Liberals, have a responsibility to challenge the government to come up with more, and to encourage the Canadian public to demand more from their so-called leaders.
The Quick and simple.
Suzuki is a card carrying member of the LPoC, and a ZOOLOGIST NOT AN ENVIROMENTALIST.
Gore is a hypocrite, he didnt do anything while he was Vice President...
While climate change is happening, it has been happening ever since the last ice age.
The Conservatives new Green Plan, If it had of been put into effect when the LPoC signed the Kyoto Accord we would all ready be at those targets.
These lefty nuts call the Green Plan reckless... What would be reckless is to do to much and send the country into a resession or worse.
Even Dion has said its impossible to meet the Kyoto Targets.
I am just trying to imagine the visual of the blood that would be shooting out of the eyes of Peter Mansbridge, Craig Oliver, JackLayton, Stephen Dion etc if a failed American REBUPLICAN politician came up here and dumped over us!
They loose their minds when a moron nobodys like Tucker Carlson or Ann Coulter spout off about us.
Is ok for the Goracle though I guess.......... /shrug
The quick and simple....
AGW?KYOTO is a political matter----leftist NGO/UN types attempting to rule the world.
The UN created the IPCC to justify KYOTO......
The IPCC invited scientists to consult and then drafted their reports based on junk science.
The EU is failing miserably at meeting their KYOTO targets---targets that were deliberately fashioned to be easy for them...and are now doing nothing---to maintain their economies.......
Canada under the LIBRANO's did nothing other than criticize the US.....
The US senate voted 95-0 in a rare example of bi-partisan unanimity to reject KYOTO.....
Russia finally signed on when all their involvement consisted of was selling CC.
Japan is like Canada.....
India/China signed on but as "developing countries" were free to consume energy at an excelerated scale and produce world leading broad spectrum pollution.........
Brazil signed on as a developing country and is rapidly clearing rainforest to grow crops to make bio-fuels and earn CC
Net result of the KYOTO protocols no reduction in real, broad spectrum polution in the western industrialised world while INDIA/CHINA go nuts in poluting and the rainforests are further threatened.
Did I leave any countries out?
That's the world I live on.
Yes, you're right that Kyoto is a scam and anything that justifies carbon trading, offset tree plantations, and "deforestation diesel" while not providing incentives for Avoided Deforestation is obviously a joke. But of course the detractors of Kyoto are split between those that think it is too radical, and those that think it doesn't go far enough and creates more problems than it solves.
It was under Clinton/ Gore that the Americans first proposed the carbon trading scheme, which was resisted by almost everyone else. The US (Clinton) threw their weight around and nonetheless forced it into the Kyoto Protocol, and everyone else accepted it thinking that compromise was needed to get the Americans on board. But at the last minute, guess who didn't sign anyway? It makes me furious to think how they totally fucked Kyoto up and then didn;t sign it anyway.
So yes, that's a big red mark on Gore's name for me, no doubt. On the other hand, I think he's doing some good for his Karma by making his film and helping to get the issue of climate change accepted by the mainstream. Even if solutions coming from our political "leadership" are pathetically uninspired, I suppose it's a step in the right direction for them to admit that there's a problem. 2 years ago, this would have been unthinkable. Who knows what ideas will be accepted by the mainstream in 2 years to come? I can but dream.
