Is Canada bribing Quebec to stay in the country?

I think you failed to notice, that we live in a consumer based economy. As such, if you want people to buy your product, you have to suit theirs needs. It being in french, is still a big need for Québécers. So as long as our societies are bassed on consuming products, Québec will remain french, no matter the ruler.
Buying French labeled products made in China doesn't do much for your economy.
Is Ford not marketing it's new Edge or Fusion vehicles as Edge and Fusion?
Quebec will have to sell its products on the world market and more specifically the USA and Canada which speak English. Building products and electricity are being sold to English speakers. Bilingual people watch movies etc in the language they are filmed in. (Note: no more Film Canada money for productions in French)
The vast majority of tourists will speak English. If their native tongue is not French or English the majority speak English as a second language.
Why does Quebec have language laws if French is so strong and not under threat to English?

The French language has NEVER been in jeapordy in Québèc, period. It may have become the language of business in Montréal, but certainly was not anywhere else. That was simply one of the pieces of propaganda that was used to get the PQ into power back in'76. Almost every single irishman, scotsman or englishman learned french very early on.

You're fucked. And, once you're fucked, my family and I will walk in and claim what is rightfully ours.

Works for me. La Station Touristique de Stoneham and most of the village and surrounding area belongs to MY family, ya knob. Irish and Huron.

That crap doesnt even deserve an answer.
longlostirishman longlostirishman:
Really?? Then why are more and more young Quebeckers enrolled in english schools? Why are more and more francophone parents insisting that their children be given first preferance in anglophone schools? And believe me, I know, as my Mom has taught in many of the different school boards across the province over the past 35 years.
Care to bring in a few statistiques? I'll give you a chance. Show me yours I'll show you mine.
One thing I do believe in, more bilingual schools, and more rigid approach in the teaching of english in french schools. Wanting your children to learn english isnt wrong. And I applaud the parrents for wanting such. The best way to learn the language, is to be emerged by it.
longlostirishman longlostirishman:
Stop the BS, and do some research. Rightly or wrongly, the world economy is english.
And you really think your teaching me something, right? And because, the world business language is english, means we should abondon and just stop speaking french? Yea.. ok.

So it continues that way.
Now I don't have a probleme with bilingualism, I'm a proud promoter of the concept. Knwoing more then one language only opens doors.
But theirs one thing that must remain clear, we are french. We speak french, we shop in french, we watch TV in french, we listen to the radio in french and we socialise in french.
Why is bill 101 still around? Because we don't want to risk the past 15 years of efforts to start over again 10 years down the road.

Yep we pander to the seperatist in Quebec, most people from Quebec are wonderful people but the seperatist are the voice that never shuts up. In two years Alberta and BC will be the largest voting block, Quebec is running our of time to get all those "Special" laws passed or it won't happen. I hope Harper doesn't give them to many concessions just keep the cry babies well fed for another two years and then they shall know what the West is willing to "Put" up with. I smell Canadian Bacon.
Too bad Alberta and BC don't have the same voice. Keep dreaming.
Well Numure it already has the largest voting block but those pesky rules that allow Quebec to pull a couple strings for two more years will let you rule for another election and then Quebec is "Toast" don't you read the stats Quebec is losing it's population and BC and Alberta are on fire and growing daily. All the talk of seperating should have companies fleeing Quebec enmasse. Ya need to read more to protect your beloved Seperatists Numure.

Actually, our population is growing. I'll admit, not as fast as yours though.
What I meant, BC doesnt exactly believe the same things you Albertans do.
We have 1 MP per 100 000 pop. Should be the same for the rest of the country, just expand the parlement is we have to. The day you wake up and realise that your under represented, you might get something. Stop thinking it's Québec stealing your seats.

#1. It does deserve an answer, but not by you, by the AN. As a background, my family was taxed out of our property for one reason, the premier despised my GGrandfather because he GAVE food directly to the people in QC during the depression(1920s and 1930s), bypassing the church and government. Currently in the courts and Stoneham is part of it. The land was given to our family as part of Huron Res(1790s) and for services rendered during War of 1812(in fee simple). Premier felt that screwing a lowly Huron breed was acceptable. fact that he was also Irish made it even better for him. By the way, GGGreat Uncle was mayor of Québèc City, which didn't help much( apparently he was quite corrupt, so nobody, anglo or franco, liked him. Hell, the family still doesn't like him.

).
2# As it comes from Mom(education stats), I'll ask her. Fact is, and cannot be denied, more and more francophone parents want an english education for their kids. Much the same as when I was a kid, more and more anglo parents wanted a french education for their kids.
And, I'll agree, a more rigid approach to english education in french schools is needed. Up until now, it really hasn't been much. In my opinion, Québèc should be an OFFICIALY bilingual province, same as New Brunswick. The government has done no favours to the province by calling it only french.
PS shouldn't have said you're fucked, consider it the whiskey talking!

I love Quebec. I love going to Montreal to party and Quebec for the history. I do think that Canada appeases Quebec too much. Try to get a job in Ottawa if you cant speak french. I hope Quebec separates so then english Canadians can get jobs. It's a complete double standard in Canada. Your french has to be perfect, yet your english doesn't. Ever take a french test to get into the government? The english test is set for grade three. The french is so tough some french Canadians cant pass it.

Better yet go to Banff or even in Calgary and these buggers are out here trying to take up the jobs too.
The United States just recently passed English as an offical language. I think we need to do that for all the provinces, but in Quebec (that other country within Canada) can speak French only. The rest of Canada, English only.
Containment is the key.
Hell if Canada doesn't get swallowed up by the United States on 2010 (United North American Treaty), then in 20 years we will have to worry about France trying to reclaim us.

Me thinks you've been watching too many Rambo movies..."containment is the key".
Time to grow up, me thinks.

Pretty obvious, you'd love to be a Yank. Worked with them, love them, but I ain't one of them nor do I want to be. And they ain't one of me. Get a grip.

Why should we do that? Last I checked, anglo's only represent 12% of the population...

Care to link this? Last I checked, the US still doesnt have an official language, gringo.

That may be true (not sure what percentage of NBers is Acadian, but consider it out of cultural respect( your term). Regardless of personal opinion, the vast majority of industry in the past in QC were created by anglos (mostly Scots with Irish slave labour!).
Look past the seperatist doctrine, and look at the truth. It was not anglos who kept francos down, it was the Church.
Without Canada, Québèc will cease to exist as you know it. The economy will crash like nothing you have ever known. I have no idea how old you are, but I survived the crash in '76. I wouldn't want anyone to go through that again.

What about giving people a choice that allows them to let their kids attend English public schools? You know, like in the free world?
