Cowards?

At heart, basically.

I don't buy the 'illegal war' defence. If you witness an illegal act you have a duty to refuse that order then take it up the chain. These asshats have been watching to much TV, probbly Al-Jazeera and get it into thier heads that the war is illegal and then run off to Canada

Its the easy way out, I think in their minds they can just jump the boarder and hide out for several years and then be welcomed back into the United States with open arms at a later date, as per the draft dodgers in the 60's.

Not to mention that it was over 60 years ago...

 Biggest point isn't it?

Im still constantly surprised when people think that soldiers from 15+ years ago are the same as today's soldier.

How are they any different?

Nope.

So.... how has hundreds if not thousands of years of military culture been transformed in the last decade and a half?

ridenrain @ Tue Jan 13, 2009 1:39 pm

They should go and Streaker should guide them all, with one way bus tickets.

The differene is between choice and no choice. These guys chose to don a uniform and agreed to to serve, they weren't drafted, they weren't coerced, at any time they could have refused to sign and they would never have had this problem. There are avenues for registering dissent within the militray which i have outlined. that being said if one deserts it's not an act of patriotism or anything other than selfishness. What people for get is that for every person that deserts someone else has to take thier place.

The instead ran away and expect to lauded as hero's for ....what...personal conviction? If they had such scruples they could have taken what other people indie the militray do, and take it up the chain of command. But no, they ran away.

Hardly heoric.

Not long ago one of these "war resisters" hippie fucks was caught smoking weed in a public park in Nelson. These guys feel they are above the law and answer only to themselves. The problem around here is that there are too many other hippie fucks that support these weed heads. It's not easy being a red neck around here.

Were they doing anything else that you saw?

Zipperfish @ Sun Feb 01, 2009 8:32 pm

Grind them upm and make soup out of them. That way, in death, they can serve more useful purpose than they ever could in life.

I'm working at Loblaws for a period of time, of my own free will, happy as a clam making $12/hr to cut steaks and grind meat. Then, the manager comes in and says "You're off the butcher's counter and you're gonna start scrubbing the shitters". I shouldn't be allowed to find another job if I'm no longer happy with the one I'm doing?

These kids that are deserting are suburban kids that thought they were signing up to learn a trade or get out of the hood. Most never REALLY thought they were gonna get shot at or have to kill folks.

You're right, a lot of the defections aren't heroic. But if they want out of the service for ANY reason, they ought to be allowed out.

Did you sign a contract saying that for x number of years, we'll pay for your education, training, benefits, and equipment, on top of giving you 12 dollars a year, with full knowledge you can actually be called to do other tasks other than cutting meat? If you break a contract, you should be punished for breaking the contract. Simple as that.

To be honest, it doesn't really matter if they didn't really think that, you should be joining full well you might be placed in harms way. What? If they really thought all they had to do is target practice with a M-16 for a few weeks every year, and they'd get paid a good sum of money, have their education partially paid for, along with whatever other perks they were getting, and they didn't realize that "Oh shit, if a war breaks out, I might need to kill people" then they're idiots.

roger-roger @ Sun Feb 01, 2009 9:55 pm

They could have also picked a trade that doesnt see direct combat, if they didnt fell they could stand to be in combat. Clerks make just as much as riflemen in the military.
