I'm glad that Stephen was able to find some one from a city to take pictures with. If Emerson is qualified and a good MP I'm glad that he'll be in the cabinet doing the most good he can. Belinda: I hope she takes the Liberal leadership (I'm actually hoping for a draft Sasha campaign). I'd love to see that "whore" debate Stephen next time around. What would you say to some one who had called you a whore in the national press? ... daggers and stilletos. Stephen and the Cons absolutely blew her crossing. Bunch of knuckle draggers.

ShepherdsDog ShepherdsDog:
Emerson has to step down and an immediate by election needs to be held in his riding. Win or lose, it will demonstrate an adherence to a code of conduct that the Conservatives said they would bring to government.

Unless Molotov cocktails start flying in Vancouver-Kingsway, Harper's made it pretty clear that there won't be any such byelection.

This, along with the appointment of an unelected party hack to a cabinet position, reeks of hypocrisy, no ifs ands or buts.

I think Harper's just shaking things up a little. As far as I know, he's well within his rights to appoint whomever he wants as Cabinet Ministers.

When Belinda crossed the floor, it was "proof" that Martin was desperate, and she was labelled a whore.

When Emerson crosses, Harper is just shaking things up a little.

Interesting.

I agree, why have I not seen this in the news? Why haven't my Albertan newspapers labeled Emerson a whore slutting out for power?

It's all about the timing Lily.

True enough, no laws have been broken.

It's the optics of it, though. For years the Conservatives have claimed (albeit unconvincingly) the moral high ground, railed about Senate appointments, whined about the democratic deficit and so on... Now Harper has turned his back on all this.

A number of prominent Conservatives went on record with all kinds of vicious remarks about Belinda Stronach when she crossed over to the Libs. These same people seem okay with Emerson crossing over to their side, however.

It's hypocrisy on A Grand Scale.

Good lord I can't believe you people actually print that, never mind believe it.

He crossed before the government was even sworn in. His constituents didn't elect a Con, they elected a Liberal. 2nd place went to the NDP.

You're right about the timing... you have it backwards, but you're right.

But they elected Emerson, not the Conservatives. People elect people who have party affiliations, not parties with people affiliations.

Virgil @ Mon Feb 06, 2006 10:48 pm

Yeah buddy, everyone votes for the party. I know one person who was considering voting other than their party because the candidate in their riding was an asshole. He stil voted for the party though.

The whole reason we have the party system is because it's almost impossible for individual candidates in every riding to advertise for themselves and what their platform is regarding their riding.

Im sure he is well within his rights to appoint whomever he does wish, so why not tell emerson to stay a liberal and be in cabinet? That way there would be conflict right? Sounds good to me.

I agree they will not call a bylection and by covered with hypocracy, which they already are.

because if they did he would loose so bad in Vancouver. I have several friends in that riding they are mad.

Specialy with the wan he ran his campaing so anti-conservative.

So next election whenever it is, he will not win in Vancouver.

bootlegga @ Tue Feb 07, 2006 10:34 am

One day in power and the Cons are already as bad as they said the Libs were the past 12 years.

Here's some quotes from Harper after Stronach defected;

"We don't go out of our way to romance MPs to get them to cross the floor. Liberals will do anything to win.

"We are trying to create a principled party where people act in a principled way, and obviously we're fairly cautious about encouraging party jumping, because that's the kind of thing that generates cynicism.

"And frankly, when someone jumps, once you're not sure you can trust them the next time, so I would always handle that with an extraordinary degree of caution."

Emerson

So much for a priniciples...looks like the Cons are just politicians like everyone else. The Cons will do anything to win apparently as well.

RIP Con Priniciples.

Sorry about your loss Hwacker, Motorcycleboy, Grainfedprairieboy, et al.

Because you live in Alberta, AKA Con Lovefest land! The majority of Albertans have the same blinders on as the Cons on this website!
