My the Integrity Honeymoon in Ottawa was mighty short. The first cluse was when David Emereson started to inject "servant of the public: repeatedly into his responses. When will people realize that he only does this at great personal sacrifice for himself in order to make the lives of his constituents a little better (/sarcasm). In the immortal words of The Who: "Meet the New Boss / Same as the Old Boss."

I feel sorry for the voters of Vancouver Kingsway--they were duped.

Emerson is a leader with a track record of results. And I can see why he would want the salary, perqs and power of a cabinet appointment over the much more humble sxeat in opposition. So short-term, it may look advantageous.

But in the long term, Emerson may become the albatross around the neck that sinks the Tories--the naked opportunism may be too crass even for Canada's jaded electorate. And Emerson himself may have trouble reasserting any integrity, or perhaps even finding people to take him seriously after this.

I think Harper's just shaking things up a little. As far as I know, he's well within his rights to appoint whomever he wants as Cabinet Ministers.

True enough, no laws have been broken.

You know, in the movie Lord of War, Nicholas Cage's character gets away with the same bullshit: the one law that would put him away for life on charges of gun smuggling isn't in effect yet, so Interpol can't lay a finger on him.

Just because the law wasn't enacted yet doesn't mean he wasn't a crook.

You know, the sad part in all this is that there is every chance that this will turn out to be the tip of the iceberg. We've now all had an unpleasant glimpse of the depths of Harper's cynicism.

Sadder still for the people of Vancouver-Kingsway, as zipperfish mentioned. It's a riding I know very well and is pretty much a wilderness for the Conservatives. It will remain so after the next election.

The saddest part though, is that many Canadians were taken in by the Cons' "we're holier-than-thou" act. Must be a bit of a painful eye-opener for some of them.

When Belinda crossed the floor, it was "proof" that Martin was desperate, and she was labelled a whore.

When Emerson crosses, Harper is just shaking things up a little.

Interesting.

Try comparing apples to apples.

Martin was desperate, without her, the government would have fallen.

Harper doesn't need Emerson to save him, a pending bill or his reign of power. Not at all.

it doesn't make it right that Harper did this, but it's not the same situation, very far from it.

Thank you, OntheIce. Someone has the sense to see that. I'm tired of the media avoiding those facts the past 24 hours.

I agree, why have I not seen this in the news? Why haven't my Albertan newspapers labeled Emerson a whore slutting out for power?

Because you live in Alberta, AKA Con Lovefest land! The majority of Albertans have the same blinders on as the Cons on this website!

 It's funny cause it's true.

It's like P.M. dishing out that 30 billion prior to the election....that was vote buying if you're conservative.....yet R.K. dishing out 400 bones to every Albertan wasn't.

Yeah, blame the media.

Then again, you might be right. After all, last night that insanely pro-Liberal journalist Andrew Coyne described Harper's move as a "fiasco".
