Justin Bieber gets a Diamond Jubilee Medal from Stephen Harp

I have to put this in the 'who cares' folder. Who cares about Bieber? He's a pop singer. Who cares about the jubilee gong? It means nothing. Who cares what he wore when he got a meaningless medal from a politician looking for a photo-op?
Meaningless to you, but not to others. The CF has been handing them out to (mostly) deserving members to recognize the above and beyond work they do in their job and community. I get it that it will be occasionally cheapened by a recipient, but Biebs did a double with the hillbilly fashionista approach.

I never understood the hate, Canada is the source of one of the most popular artists in the world, that should be a source of pride even if you hate his music.
Canadians love to shit on Canadian talent. I've never understood it either.
If you're calling him talented, then we better get a hold of Webster's for a definition change

Not sure when auto-tuning and lip-synching became talent.
I can't stand Celine Dion either but at least she can friggin' sing.
Thanks for proving my point.
Singers don't get discovered using auto-tune or lip syncing, they get discovered due to their natural talent.
This is a kid that taught himself how to play numerous instruments all while writing and producing music.
It may not be a talent that you appreciate but millions if not billions of people do. Myself included.

A product is discovered. Talent is not necessary anymore.

Bang on!
Biebs can sing and write pap, but it's the fact that he can be marketed to tweens with cash that is the real point here.
You want Canadian talent, try the Sheep Dogs, Spirit of the West, or some of the other groups that produce a far superior product but have not become the product themselves.

See, someone else gets it. The PMO chose the location, and the protocol. It's their snub to the queen. Beebs is doing what he does, and what he got the medal for presumably. Exactly what he's done to make Canada a better place it's hard to tell for sure. Anybody know?

If Justin was my kid I would be all "Hey you guys, Justin is my kid!!"
"
Unfortunately he isn't so I'm just all "Why is he the half time show is that really happening?".

"Superior product" is all relative.
You equate the lack of marketability as a good trait while many others (artists, labels and fans) would disagree.

Huh...no where in my post did I state that a "lack of marketability was a good trait" though I appreciate you inserting it to make an argument.
What I did state was that marketability does not necessarily denote superior talent - check out the Kardashians and Paris Hilton if you need an example of such.
As for the artists, labels and fans, I submit it's the ones looking for profit over talent that would be disagreeing.

Hmmm... He can attend the White House Correspondents dinner in a suit... The Grammy's, The Golden Globes and other random occasions. He has even performed in suits! OHHH, the SHOCKER!!!
Hell, even just wearing a hoodie would have been more respectful than this.
Why go, do this photo-op and accept that medal if you make VERY clear that you don't care?

You forgot Honey Boo Boo, John and Kate plus 8, 19 kids and counting or ANY other reality tv bs show.

Everybody and anybody is getting them in the GTA, most are non military or public service recipients that couldn't give a shite about the monarchy or tradition.
Cheapened? Really? Is a jubilee gong that important to you?
It's kinda similar to the stuffed shirts outrage at the Beatles getting OBE's in the 1960's.
I have the golden jubilee gong. Its not like the Queen gave it to me. Looks nice on my best blue with the other two shiny things.
Gongs. The real ones are a poor substitute for all the things guys have missed while they have been away in some shit-hole or other.

The meaning of the medal is important when it is delivered in the spirit of that meaning - so yes. Sometimes it's nice to have that superficial appreciation of all the time you spent in a shit hole or puking your guts out in sea state 8 away from friends and family or all those long hours you work that nobody outside of the grey hull or cubicle gives a shit about. At some point someone appreciates it and goes through the effort to see you get a gong.
That's a nice feeling.
I get it you don't think much of it but others do.
A jubilee gong for puking at sea? We are on different planets Gunny.
Enjoy yours mate. Mine is just a shiny thing on my chest that means little, obviously it means more to you but its still just a commemorative gong.
It's not for a tour in a shitty place or for getting shot at in another shitty place. When I compare my gongs to the guys with Sacrifice Medals and bars to Afghan gongs I feel embarrassed.
Justin having a jubilee medal sums it’s credibility as an ‘award’ up. Just like the OBE or MBE.

I don't have one but thanks for the assumptions.
I think I'll end this now as nothing positive will come of it and I don't think I like your cynical planet anyway.
kitty kitty:
i am not a Bilieber and yet i can not ignore the fact that Justin Bieber is a HUGE international pop star. Like him or not he does bring recognition to Canada and Canadians. He gets so many accolades does he really need (or deserve) a Diamond Jubilee Medal? Who cares, good on him!
Exactly. I don't like his stuff, but then again, I'm not exactly his target demographic either.
