Yeah well the CANFORGEN didn't cover handing them out for doing your job. You might have a point here if the Lookout added captions for the awards by saying, "LS Bloggins was awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal because he stood three foreign port duty watches over six consecutive months."

SInce they don't, I'd submit you don't really know why they were chosen for the award. Most of the guys I know who have received these did not get them because they showed and punched the clock. Usually it's because they went well beyond what most others did (and have been doing it for some time) plus they are involved in the community through volunteer works.

I know of course, a few who managed to pull the wool over someone's eyes, but that's the minority. I'm not sure why people get so miserable over other people's recognition.

So many of these medals have been given out, and so many of the recipients are patently undeserving, that the award is meaningless. That's not a comment on Bieber, but on the process as a whole.

What do you do with such a medal? I'm sure that Mr. Bean took the one he got and pinned it on Teddy.

I doubt that Harper minded handing a medal to Bieber. It enhances his "cool factor", which isn't a bad thing. Politicians strive for it all the time.

   

I'm curious. Outside of Beebs, whom do you know has received one that was patently undeserving? And why were they patently undeserving?

   

When you have a medal that has subjective 'requirements' that differ from community to community, province to province, it's shine is already dulled. If it's the 'I coached some kids' medal (which it patently seems to be), why get stressed at Bieber getting it?

I'm not picking a fight Gunny, you seem to be able to do that quite well on your own these days.

How about Bloc MP's, seperatist MP's who ALL received the award? They did give them back, however.

A quick search will find you a host of articles on people who received the award....some of the recipients are what have made the medal a running joke.

   

60,000 are being handed out - some of them are a joke. So the correct response is to write them all off?

Just like when people say the Nobel Peace Prize is a joke because (insert whomever I think didn't deserve it) got it.

The purpose of the medal is to "honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians".

Do we honour those that serve with the sole intention to break apart Canada? Why yes, we do!

When you give the medal to every single Bloc MP, it tarnishes the value of the medal to those who actually are deserving.

Even better, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation has the ability to hand out the medals on their own, as well as lobbyists from the big banks and religious organizations such as Canadian Christian Association.

It's a "Participant" medal for adults. If you've done something remotely good for your community, regardless of your role and still alive, you're fit to be nominated.

   

I take that as yes...write them off.
