No they can't pull him and that is what makes this such a beautiful, beautiful thing, they are going to have to stick by this guy to the bitter end.

Or just announce, in advance, that if elected, he will be removed and a by-election will take place.
Or the conservatives could just change their campaign headquarters:

Not enough room. It's full of Liberals.

This is really a non-issue at the moment. Sure, a Conservative candidate is CHARGED with a crime. If found guilty, he will be made to step down (if elected). In Canada we are innocent until proven guilty. We may say that "he did it. he was found with a thousand gallons of beer" or whatever. Fact is, our legal system works the way it does for a reason. Ralph Goodale didn't step down as Finance minister, despite an RCMP investigation (which he should have done, ONLY for the reason of allowing the investigation to run smoothly, not to imply any guilt. I actually like Ralph Goodale).

I am an employer, and I run background checks on potential employees. When it comes back negative, I have to assume everything is okay with them in regards to the law. There's only so much information you can gather with the criminal background check. If that person did something last month, but the police have not found them yet, NOTHING will show up on the check. This seems like what happend with this guy and the criminal background check by the CPC. The guy was not charged with anything, and did not say anything about smuggling.

How I see it, Stephen Harper can't win in this situation with his political opponents. If he sticks with the candidate for now (as he did) he's blasted for being unethical. If he dropped him as a candidate, he'd be blasted for showing his true colours by being so tough on crime as to not even wait for a verdict by a judge and jury. He's a "neo-con" or "extreme right wing". There's no way to win this politically. The best thing to do is what he did. Wait and see what happens in the legal system, and make a decision based on the end result of the ordeal. Best not to jump to conclusions and make rushed decisions (like one to bring the country into another round of constitutional debates, eh Mr. Martin?)

Well said. It really is a no win situation.

I find it interesting and somewhat frightening that this man possibly smuggling booze and a car across the border, bothers the local liberals more than thier own party stealing millions from taxpayers. This man should have at least informed his party of pending charges though. He's probably not someone I would vote for, on the other hand he's still better than a liberal. :)

torian @ Thu Jan 12, 2006 5:44 am

they should remove him from the running, regardless of whether he is guilty or innocent.

He lied, and it has no place in our election or govt

I find it frightening that a Canadian can judge an entire group of people based on the actions of a few as you just did. All Liberals are (insert X) ring a bell? You guys jumped all over every bad comment made by any Liberal candidate and when one of yours gets caught smuggling then suddenly its unethical to bring up the fact that the person caught doing the crime is a CPC candidate as well.

BTW, it does bother us, we just don't believe the corruption is endemic to the entire party just as you don't believe the entire CPC party are smugglers.

Yes it does ring a bell, it's something you liberals do on a neverending basis.

Considering the massive amount of people on this forum alone calling the liberals names and blanketly condemning all Liberals as crooks means in reality it is you cons doing won a continual basis what you keep accusing us of doing.

It looks like somebody in the Conservative HQ failed to do their homework on this Zeisman clown.

It's probably a bit late to boot him from the party this late in the election. I hope people in that riding are smart enough to vote against him. If by some chance he wins on the 23rd, Harper should boot him out of the party as soon as he's convicted and let him sit as an independent.

Like the way you Liberals paint all Canadian soldiers as a bunch of oppressive goons just waiting to goose step into our cities to impose martial law?

Hey Derby, I saw a few troops at CFB Edmonton interviewed on Global news last night. They were fucking pissed off at the Liberals and we'rent afraid to say so on camera either.

Looks like your dad's impression of soldiers voting intentions is a little off the mark!

1) My fathers "impression" was based on over 35 years of service.

2) His observations included the fact that soldiers were always grumbling about the party in charge so you aren't contradicting what he said at all.

3) That ad pissed even me off and I can understand why they are upset about it.

4) Martin didn't personally make it or air it even though he will be punished by it. Some Liberal party campaign administrator will likely lose their job for even conceiving of such an attack ad let alone the bonehead play of posting it on a website before final approval.

5) I know from personal experience that military people said the same angry hateful things against the PC's when they were in power.

Someday you might be right, someday.

Harper just had a press conference and they just cut him loose.

So when does Goodale leave?
When is Mr. Murphy leaving?
How about Mr. Dosanjh?
At this rate, you Libs won't have anyone left :D

After all, morals are not relative, are they?
