Vancouver Canucks 2010 / 2011
Quite the rework on Defence.

It's not really that much of a change, Mitchell, O'Brien and Baumgartner are gone, Hamhuis and Ballard are in, and Salo will be back.....sometime.... The thing that pisses me off is that Morrison blew out his ACL in the 07-08 season and he wasn't resigned. Mitchell suffered the concussion late last season and he wasn't offered a new contract. It seems the Canucks don't like to resign injured players, or maybe it's they just have a thing about homegrown players.

GOOD BYE B-MO
$1:
Brendan Morrison was released from his professional tryout contract with the Canucks Sunday. Despite being a fan favorite in Vancouver and having a great relationship with the team, there, unfortunately, wansn’t a place for the 35-year-old centre on the team.
Morrison came to camp with a team that already had a bloated roster, especially in the middle position, but some, Morrison included, believed a spot could still be found for him.
"There was a perception that there were huge odds to overcome, Morrison told Ben Kuzma of The Province. “But I firmly believe I could have made the team. My versatility would have been a huge bonus. It just boiled down to what the team wanted -- what was the identity -- and I'm a little surprised at the outcome.”
"After we evaluated everything Brendan brings to the table and what we have here, we just thought it would be better for us to go in a different direction," said Vigneault to Kuzma. "Younger players, bigger size and they bring something than Brendan doesn't. They give us a bigger and grittier line. But I'm confident he'll be able to find a job somewhere in the league.”
It did not take long for Morrison to find another job, the Calgary Flames announced today they signed the centre. The team was in need of a new centre following injuries to Daymond Langkow, Matt Stajan, Ryan Stone and David Moss
Morrison spent seven seasons with the Canucks, before bouncing from the Anaheim Ducks to the Dallas Stars to the Washington Capitals, despite not reaching the levels of success he had with Vancouver, last season was Morrison’s most successful since 06/07. He recorded 12 goals and 30 assists.

.........'nuff said?
Makes me sad, but what's done is done. Onwards to the Cup!

KINGS at CANUCKS
Exactly 40 years ago on this date, the Canucks played their very first NHL game in front of a packed house at the Pacific Coliseum against these very same Kings -- and both teams will be dressed appropriately to celebrate the occasion. The Kings will be decked out in their original purple and gold, while the Canucks will go with their throwback sweater featuring the traditional "stick-in-rink" crest.
The Canucks have been living with high expectations for some time. Two consecutive Northwest Division titles whetted the fans' appetites, two playoff losses to the Blackhawks frustrated them. With the Stanley Cup champion Hawks being forced to work around salary-cap issues, a lot of the Canucks faithful are wondering if this is the year the franchise wins its first.
One important story for the short term, however, is who will take on the captain's "C" relinquished by goalie Roberto Luongo last month. Henrik Sedin is a favorite, but the announcement won't be made until just prior to Saturday's game.

Going to highjack this thread from time to time. I went to the Texas Stars game last Sat. The Texas Stars are the feeder team to the Dallas Stars. The Texas Stars were the western conf. Champs last year.
It was a preseason game and I got a free pass to see them. I got there about 3 minutes after the 1st period started and there was no line. I asked for the section I most wanted and they had seats open there. When asked where I wanted to sit I was like as close to the glass as I can get. ROW 5 from the glass. Woohooo. I walk in and its maybe 1/4 full. I sat next to a young couple who I enjoyed chatting with. We got to see one of the most amazing goals. Over the left shoulder of the goalie. I swear when the first fight broke out I was the first on my feet screaming YEAAAHHHHH!!!! During the 2nd and 3rd period the young couple and I went to the bar for a beer. We get served only to find out we can't leave the bar with the beer. We had to buy from the vendors to bring the beer back into the rink.?!? WTF its all in the same building, same price same stupid plastic cups... oh well. We rushed back in went right by our seats in Row 5 and sat in Row 3 and stayed there till the end of the game. We were just to the left of the home team bench. The Ice Girls were prety and two were sweet enough to let me take a pic of them after the game. Needless to say they are not as good as the pros but some I am sure will make it to Dallas. The Goalie for the Texas Stars is BIG. I swear he was a head taller then anyone else on the rink.
In the near future I'll probably be buying a 10 game package to see some home games on my days off. Their season starts tonight. Had a blast and can't wait to go again. Hope next time my buddy that likes hockey can go he was sick and couldn't make the free pass game.
Well theres my blurp on my recent hockey experiance. Back to the Canucks.

Great opening ceremony for the team's 40th anniversary. Can't beat the way they announced Henrik's captaincy with the jersey swap with Orland.

“I am truly honoured to be named Captain of the Vancouver Canucks,” said Sedin. “I have great respect for the Captains who led the team before me and feel privileged to know them or have played alongside them during their careers as Canucks. With the support of Daniel, Ryan, Kevin and Manny I look forward to leading this team.”
Sedin enters his 10th NHL season and has played his entire career as a Canuck since being selected by Vancouver third overall in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. Henrik has represented Team Sweden at the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympic Games, winning gold in Turin, Italy in 2006.
Over the span of a decade, Henrik has been an active member in the community, supporting charitable initiatives with the Canucks in addition to personal donations. Prior to the beginning of the season, Henrik shared his support of literacy through the Raise-A-Reader campaign and has been a strong proponent of education at all ages. Henrik has also participated in a number of visits to children’s facilities, with adolescents facing chronic diseases, including BC Children’s Hospital and Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. In March of 2010, Henrik and Daniel Sedin, together with their wives Johanna and Marinette, made a gift of $1.5 million to help build a new BC Children’s Hospital. Their gift was in support of the hospital’s Campaign for BC Children, and specifically to the Intensive Care Unit and Diagnostics and Imaging area in the new hospital.
