Ok hows this sound.....Random drug testing for anyone who gets medical in Canada, and I include alcohol as a drug btw. Medical is a social program in Canada, why not that?

Anyone who thinks a single parent chooses to 'sit on their ass' and raise 'babies they cant afford' should give their heads a shake. Takes two to make a child and if a single parent gets a job at McDonald's, who will pay for the $800/mo daycare? The parents paycheque certainly wont. Many people have come off the roles and made big changes in their lives, with positive supportive people around them, but doesnt seem like many of you would be part of the positive supportive people. One for all Eh? must be a nice life never to have to ask for help.

It's just not possible to teach everyone how to 'fish'. Some people are dumber than a brick and are alot more useless than said brick....

newfette @ Thu Oct 04, 2007 9:22 am

ok.. here where i live there are social program, especially for women, that teach them the basic skills they need to find and hold a job but if people dont want to take advantage of these programs then what?

should they still be pittied and treated fairly while they suck on a crack pipe?

Not every single parent is on welfare. Wonder who they manage??? Not every family needs all-day daycare. Kids in school can go to some afterschool care. I don't think that should be so expensive.

Like I said before, if people want people off welfare, there should be solutions, so people can get off welfare.

so what do you suggest?

if they can't be taught how to do a job they should be allowed to sit on welfare??

Sucking on a crack pipe is an entirely different problem than being underemployed. An employment program is only designed for job searching not for detox and treatment. You cant put someone through an employment program if they are actively using. Not only is treatment needed for that, but the treatment for what ever they are using the drug to quiet inside of them. Once that is done then employment will open up.

I guess, unless you want to execute them for being too dumb to hold a job....problem solved...we could weed them out in grade one and not even waste school funds on them...I may be on to something....

What if your child isnt in after school care or you have a special needs child? Here the parents must get off welfare when the child turns 3, they arent in fulltime daycare. What if you have no family support?
And yes alot of single parents arent on welfare, but maybe for a short time they were, just for a hand up. I was when i left an abusive situation and then i went back to work and school, but i was lucky to have community support.

Welfare is a necessary evil and will be abused just like everything else is. We can only hope that the government agencies that look after it take steps to minimize the abuse as much as possible. In combatting the abuse though, there is always a threshold to how much taxpayer money you can spend combatting the abuse.

Maybe we could hire a welfare recipients at $60 000 a year plus full benefits to go out and collect the pee samples. We could then train other welfare recipients at $75 000 a year to test the pee samples and administrators at $100 000 per year.....
