Well when these people are bitching saying english only, what about all those canadians who went overseas, who were chinese, or natives or blacks or whatever. Some were Ukranian kids who barely spoke a word of english, and never spoke english at home. We are a country made up of all kinds of people who love this country and if you translate the anthem doesn't necessarily mean your changing anything. I have neighbours from Taiwan and they spend hours learning english and ask about our customs and attempt to add their customs to our rich history and that is what our country is all about.
We are not a white english speaking nation we are a multi cultural collection of villages that somehow get along and I don't have a problem with that. These people who want to join in the singing of our anthem also go to the polls and vote, and that is something our white english speaking brothers don't always do. Just because they are going to sing the anthem in their own language, doesn't mean they are less patiotic.

Wrong and learn some history. Might want to start with "Trudeau and his multicultrialistic ideals, which wasn't the case before him. Canada wasn't always a "get along happy pappy group" and others today don't think that. Your way, isn't the only way.

Aw, c'mon, Tman! The "Get Along Happy Pappy Vision" has always represented Canada at her greatest. :P

Does that include the military? 8)

Sure - if the military subscribes to the Get Along Happy Pappy Vision.

Listen Kate, as previously stated, you are entitled to your opinion. And I respect that

Only that your first post came out a little harsh, that's all.

I can certainly sympathize with your situation and why you have a dislike of the French. But there are others, I'm sure, to which this has occured. But, they might not necessarily blame it entirely on the the French language.

Well, it so happens that Canada has more than English as an official language. It has been that way since its foundation. If only there was a way to make you change your view on this issue, surely would be glad to do it. But if it's any consolation, there are numerous occasions on where I defended the Anglos on several threads.

kitty, I'm the absolute last one you want to hear from on this subject. I cringe when I hear our anthem sung in English/French. I hate it. Canada's an English speaking country. End of story. Should be our national language IMHO. 99% of the country is English speaking.

And ''Bonjour'' to you too, Kate

Oh Canada was composed by Calixa Lavallée (a French speaking composer) :D

Also, the percentage of French speaking people in Canada is about 25% or 6.8 million people.

So that would leaves the other 75% Anglos.

Btw, you have a right to your opinion. But there is always a nice way to say it

And to say, I like Saskatchewan

I was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario. My father is a retired opp. I got a job with an airline out of high school and worked for a few years for a charted company. Know why I didn't go further, I didn't learn French (Didn't qualify for Air Canada) . I quit the business when I was young because of that. How sad is that? Forced to learn a language in my country. I don't agree with that. I was really good at my job!!!!!!

No one forced you to learn French.

You could always have gotten a job with CP, PWA, Wardair or some such outfit.

NO! I deserved working for the biggest.

Apparently you didn't. :|

To start with you can imagine whatever you want, look at your cereal box, the two official languages are there because the law requires it. Before Trudeau, it was still a dual language country going back to confederation, when the new government allow quebec to keep its language rights, thus english and french.
Everywhere else in the world people are spending tons of money to learn as many languages as possible in order to compete. Not here we will hang out in our little white enclave of insecurity and pretend the world isn't changing because we don't want to change. At some point we will pull of our blinders and realize there is no such thing as a little white enclave, and that people are people and there is no them and us we are all Canadians, or is that what some people resent?
As for our national anthem in the beginning there was no line in there about God keep our land, that was added in the not too distant past. I don't care for it because it isn't necessary but I am not losing any sleep over it either. As for other stuff, the red coats would look pretty silly in todays military world, or what about the national police force wearing their pill box hats? Did you know the other part of the uniform acceptable are indian brades because some of the original scouts were native.
The history and evelution of a country is a constantly changing thing.
I've been around a long time I even remember when we didn't have our own flag, are you suggesting we should scrap the maple leaf? God I thought that debate was over years ago but maybe not.
This country is a totally different place than it was a few decades ago and it to me is a good thing.
You are right about english being the majority in the west that is true, but french by legal definition is equal. While discussing majority and minority, it is true in a democrasy majority rules but all to often we do not read the rest of the intent, which states while the majority rules it is encumbant on that majority to respect the rights of the minority. So it is not really about political correctness, it is about basic manners.

Why was it so important for you to work for Air Canada? Was it because the pay/benefits/working conditions were better?

At the time it was still a Crown Corporation.

How badly did you really want to work for Air Canada?

I think she means she shouldn't have to learn another language to earn a decent paycheque in this country which actually is pretty discriminatory in a twisted way.

Really wanted it bad at that time of my life to be honest. I felt very hurt that that was the only reason I didn't qualify . Just being very honest.

Quebec's hold on our country makes me sick. Separate fast okay. 8O That's my only complaint about this fine country we live in. That should explain my feelings towards any other language.

You are right Kate.. you are the last one we want to hear from on this subject.

I have an idea for you.. take your passport, and take the bus out of whatever town you live in.

Go east.. cross the border into Quebec.. no, you dont need your passport, its ok.

Have a look around.. see, they still call this place CANADA.. OMG !!!

Go to Montreal.. 2 million Canadian people living there.

Actually Kate, keep going east.. there is more to see

Cross into New Brunswick.. see how the people can speak both French and English ??

See how they use it together, moving from one to the other... and check your maps.. its still called CANADA !!!!

then please, fly back to your village and geta copy of our constitution..its a cracking read !

just so you know, i cant sing the National Anthem in either French or English.. i have to use both..
