kitty, I'm the absolute last one you want to hear from on this subject. I cringe when I hear our anthem sung in English/French. I hate it. Canada's an English speaking country. End of story. Should be our national language IMHO. 99% of the country is English speaking.

And ''Bonjour'' to you too, Kate

Oh Canada was composed by Calixa Lavallée (a French speaking composer) :D

Also, the percentage of French speaking people in Canada is about 25% or 6.8 million people.

So that would leaves the other 75% Anglos.

Btw, you have a right to your opinion. But there is always a nice way to say it

And to say, I like Saskatchewan

I was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario. My father is a retired opp. I got a job with an airline out of high school and worked for a few years for a charted company. Know why I didn't go further, I didn't learn French (Didn't qualify for Air Canada) . I quit the business when I was young because of that. How sad is that? Forced to learn a language in my country. I don't agree with that. I was really good at my job!!!!!!

No one forced you to learn French.

You could always have gotten a job with CP, PWA, Wardair or some such outfit.

NO! I deserved working for the biggest.

Apparently you didn't. :|

The only thing I was lacking was French! I'm resentful. It's not right.

Why was it so important for you to work for Air Canada? Was it because the pay/benefits/working conditions were better?

At the time it was still a Crown Corporation.

How badly did you really want to work for Air Canada?

I think she means she shouldn't have to learn another language to earn a decent paycheque in this country which actually is pretty discriminatory in a twisted way.

Fair enough, but maybe she should have known that in order to get that decent paycheque she'd have to earn it - and that one of the prerequisites might be a modicum of ability in French if she wanted to work for a Crown Corporation that had to abide by relevant legislation regarding the provision of bilingual services. This legislation would have been around for a while by the time Kate entered the aviation racket - she must have known well in advance what might be necessary in order to gain employment with Air Canada.

Yet, even with this advance knowledge, she chose not to learn French.

I can't help but suspect that she wasn't really all that motivated to work for Air Canada to begin with.

I liked the Cree version that was sung at the hockey game in Edmonton. There's also a very beautifull Irish version done in gaelic(sp).

I dont think it matters what language its in.

Inuktitut version.

Blue and white with a splash of red. This is the new flag of the self-governed Tlicho people. It unfurls with a snap as a group of youth sing Oh Canada in Tlicho. “A lot of artists have put a lot of work into the flag,” Wetrade says proudly. “It means many things. The sun, the land and the river and the four tipis represent the four Tlicho communities. When Chief Monfwi spoke in 1921, he said: ‘As long as the sun rises and river flows and does not flow backward, everything will be okay.’”

That's so freaky.

I am the original poster of that thread on IGT.com. I'm <<Ossian>>. I've been posting there for a few years. This is the first time two of my online personas have ever crossed paths.

Are you a poster over at IGT?

Justkate.. what f---n planet are you on..Canada has two official languages English and French.. the country was founded by the french and the English came later.. the battle of the plains of abraham changed the course of history but the official languages are entrenched in the constitution.. so get a grip and study the history and social fabric of this country... you are so ignorant about the country you live in.... this crap really pisses me off

and for those of you who blame lack of knowing french to get a government job in canada... c'est la vie.. its the same for a french person. I am half french half english. my mother was quebecoise.. I speak read and write in both languages.. I do not qualify for work in a government job or hospital because I fall short in the testing.... do I whine about that..no I dont cut it and if I wanted to I would increase knowledge in both official languages.....and to the person who said there were there were 25% french and so that makes 75% anglos... you need to do your home work.. Canada is multicultural therefore there are a large percentage of the population whose mother tongue is neither french or english... but the reality is the country is officially bilingual.. that meaning french and english.... geeze
