Should Voting be Mandatory

It should not be a criminal act to not vote because abstaining is a democratic right. Once we take away a right such as the right to abstain what stops us from taking away the right to vote?

It's liberals like you that ruined this great country. Failure to vote should be criminal. And by making it such, we arn't taking away the right to abstain. It's not hard to spoil a ballot, moron. Just select two candidates, or put it in blank, or mark it wrong. You're still abstaining.
I'd be fine if the made it mandatory, but only if:
a)they introduced a "None of the above" option
b) not showing up on election day would automatically assume your vote to be "None of the above".
Other than that, you're out of your tree.

true but, why should you have to go to a polling station? Why dose something like this have to be legislated? And would telling someone not to vote be a criminal offence because then you are imparing free speech.
Democracy give people the right to burn the flag refuse to vote and preech that dicatorships make the best governments, the sooner people understand this the sooner they will understand how great democracy is.
I think better educating people on how the government DOES affect our lives will bring in more votes.
From my (albeit limited) experience, the number one reason people do not vote is becuase they feel all politicians are the same and that thier vote won't make a difference.
Simply showing people that there are infact different (eg. NOT CORRUPT) politicians to vote for, and that that one vote WILL make a difference, I am certain you will find more voters getting out on that day to show thier support for thier party.
Other than that, I dont think voting should be mandatory....Just doesnt seem right to me. No one should feel pressured into voting.

I disagree. Someone for a project at my school made something about voting. They said that soldiers fought and still fight for our right to vote. They also fought, and still fight for our right to choose not to vote. Hence why it is a free country. Forcing people to have to go do something where they are just going to spoil the ballot is retarded.

Avro Avro:
Forcing people to vote in a democratic free society is a contradiction.
Exactly

Wrong! Our country isn't free because people can choose to not vote! It isn't free or democratic in any way!. We only get one vote every four years. We simply get to choose which dictator gets in.
One example of how Canada is a Communist country is the Cat licensing bylaw here in calgary. Before council voted on it, it was a heated issue in all the media sources here. In a democracy, such as America, such a controversial issue would've been called, say, "Prop-1" and would've been put to a municipal referendum. Instead, the communists one again, and city council made the arbitrary decision that cats need to be licensed, which is the right thing, but it should still've been put to a vote.
We are only free because people are allowed to earn different wages, eat what we want, and choose to be obese slobs.
And if you don't want people to mass-spoil ballots, make them pay when they vote. Everyone should pay Five dollars when they recieve their ballot.
We need more democracy in this country!!!!
forcing people to vote is unfeasable because it is impossible to enforce, especially in a country the size of canada, with millions of people. a better idea is to reward voting with an incentive and at the same time encourage people to make informed decisions instead of just voting randomly to get the goodies. this can be done through tv ads for example

Muniocipalities can hold plebicites. Just get 300 signatures or so (check your provincial guidlines and Calgary is probley 3000 is it's based on pop.) then the municipality must hold a refferendum on that resolution. eg.
Where as most cats have a tag and;
where as most cats are kept indoors and;
where as cat tags have traditionaly been volentary,
Be it resolved that the City of Calgary disoncontinues mandetory use of cat tags.
It's a good thing they decided that cats should be licensed, around here, there's about seven cats to one daog at the city shelter.
And for indelible, it's not hard to enforce, tie a persons sin number to their voter card, if their sin number doesn't come back from the election, then wherever they are, send the Police. if they're in a city, send the municipal boys, if their in a rural area outside Ont, PQ, send the RCMP, and in those provinces, send the provincial police.
The penalty:
Two years less a day in prison.

Are you insane? You said it isn't free because they get to choose. Think about that for a second. So Harper is a dictator? Martin was one? Cretien? Mulroney? Mcdonald? All dictators? What in hell is wrong with you?

They had to license cats?

If they made something as trivial as that a proposition. Then we would waste billions doing it.

Yes, Canadian Prime Ministers are dictators. Just because someone is a dictator they don't have to be bad to their people. Look at the current guy running China. He's a Communist. And, if you'd look at the post above yours, I'm pretty sure that people wouldn't mind paying five dollars and voting if their staring down a two years less a day prison sentence.

That is more like a dicatator then anything else. You might want to check the difinition of dictator.
1. An absolute ruler.
2. A tyrant; a despot.
3. An ancient Roman magistrate appointed temporarily to deal with an immediate crisis or emergency.
4. One who dictates: These initials are those of the dictator of the letter.
lets see 1. Nope, still got house and senate.
2. Nope.
3 nope
4. don't think so.
What does china have to do with this? Because that guy is a dictator, then we are run by a dictator? I would love to see how you strung together that little piece of brilliant logic.
