Should Voting be Mandatory

Forcing people to vote in a democratic free society is a contradiction.

Scary I actually agree with Avro on this one!

Wrong! Our country isn't free because people can choose to not vote! It isn't free or democratic in any way!. We only get one vote every four years. We simply get to choose which dictator gets in.
One example of how Canada is a Communist country is the Cat licensing bylaw here in calgary. Before council voted on it, it was a heated issue in all the media sources here. In a democracy, such as America, such a controversial issue would've been called, say, "Prop-1" and would've been put to a municipal referendum. Instead, the communists one again, and city council made the arbitrary decision that cats need to be licensed, which is the right thing, but it should still've been put to a vote.
We are only free because people are allowed to earn different wages, eat what we want, and choose to be obese slobs.
And if you don't want people to mass-spoil ballots, make them pay when they vote. Everyone should pay Five dollars when they recieve their ballot.
We need more democracy in this country!!!!

It's a good thing they decided that cats should be licensed, around here, there's about seven cats to one daog at the city shelter.
And for indelible, it's not hard to enforce, tie a persons sin number to their voter card, if their sin number doesn't come back from the election, then wherever they are, send the Police. if they're in a city, send the municipal boys, if their in a rural area outside Ont, PQ, send the RCMP, and in those provinces, send the provincial police.
The penalty:
Two years less a day in prison.
Welcome comrade! Apparently your idea of democracy runs counter to what approximately 99% of educated people think!

Since my idea of democracy is wrong, why is voting mandatory in alot of countries, such as Australia??
And I would like to know how Stephan Harper, and all Prime Ministers, arn't dictators with absolute authority. Just recently, stephan harper was caught just simply signing legislation into effect, he silenced military personnel, stating that they can only act as his mouthpieces if the do go to the media. He also arbitrarily decided that the media shouldn't be automatically allowed at trenton. And, for all you america haters out there, he also signed the soft wood lumber agreement on his own.
I also brought up the Chinese dude because tricks, you were making it seem that simply because we arn't treated like crap by our government, we don't have a communist system in place. Well, in China, they have all the freedoms we do, with the exception of democratic rights.

It must go through the senate and the house of commons and then be okayed by the governor general too if I am not mistaken. If he truly did this without going through those steps, he would be out before you could scream dictator. Silencing military personnel....uh...hester told me a while back that it is military protocol. They are not allowed to speak out against their leaders in a public place. At least I think thats what it was.

A) Military personnel agree with that. It was a smart move and we have already gone over it before on this board.
B) Read my above points.

No I didn't. Go back and find that for me.

Riiiiight, they have all those freedoms...except when they are being killed for not working for walmart.

Mandatory voting removes CHOICE. Choice is a foundation of democracy, to remove it is to move closer to a communist or socialist system.
Firstly, as a serving member of the CF I have never been "allowed" to shoot my mouth off in regards to government actions or policy. So in reality Harper changed,,,, nothing!
In regards to Trenton, he made a decision, in good faith, and later changed it. Contrary to what you may believe the "media' has NEVER been granted automatic access to ANY Candian Forces base.
Finally, "all the freedoms we do, with the exception of democratic rights". WTF have you been smoking? While Canada is far from perfect, having spent a lot of time in various other countries (including Communist countries), that is the most contradictory, asinine comment I have seen in some time.

and who's gonna pay for all this? don't you think the police have better things to do like busting crack heads?

Nobody will, because it's a stupid idea and won't happen.
He might as well suggest that not eating vegetables should be a criminal offense.
the problem with constitutional style democracy is there isn't enough involvement from people.
a few of us go out and vote exercising our democratic right, and then after that constituants have little input on legislation.
granted, the opposite is utopian, when all people make all the decisions. this is impossible in a country the size of canada with the size of our population.
another thing is that once we vote in a PM, there isn't enough that people can do to get rid of him/her until election time. we saw this with the paul martin tenure. the fixed elections proposal is a good start but we need an impeachment type of thing here. that is one of the few things i like about the US system.

Well, since the RCMP arn't too good at their job, they could be made responsible. And before anyone tells me I'm stupid, just remember, it was the BC RCMP Highway patrol who left a dead guy to sit in his vehicle on the side of the highway for TWO DAYS!!!!! And when questioned about it, the Patrolmen responsible said that they didn't think anything was wrong, and thay saw the vehicle each time they drove down that strip of highway, for two days, before they finally thought something was wrong when the guy was finally checked on a third day.
So I say lets make the RCMP earn their money! How hard can it be to knock on a dor when someone tells you to, or does that take two days as well?

First of all, linking sin numbers to voter cards kinda takes away the anonymity of the voters. Also, you're being completely unreasonable. Even if enforcing the penalty of imprisonment for 2 yrs less a day in prison, say....70% of the apathetic eligible voters decide to go and vote, that 30% divided by the amount of RCMP in canada would still have an astronomical ratio against the RCMP. Not only this, if they have to go around knocking on doors, arresting and imprisoning everyone who didn't vote. first of all, you'd be taking away a LOT of workers for 2 yrs. You'll JAM the already busy courts which could be put to better use. Dont think people would quiety go to prison. They're still protected by the Charter...Omg! Dont tell me we should take that away too just so we can make voting mandatory! they'll all want a fair trial. You'll mess up the whole country trying to enforce such a ridiculous law. who's gonna pay for all trials and judges, and prisons? WE WILL! the tax payers! We'll end up paying even more, making more people angry. People who didn't want to vote because of false promises made to them and it'll get worse if we need to pay more tax just so we can ENFORCE us to vote for someone who's responsible for raising the tax. Yet you make them vote. a larger amount of ballots would be spoiled, or even more voters would refuse to vote. counterproductive much? The whole country would revolt. Worse comes to worse, making voting mandatory under such unreasonable conditions would surely start a revolution.
This the most lame-brain ideas to come down the pike yet.
What an absolutely efficient way to emiminate one of the prime features of an election---abstaining.
If a citizen has not sufficient interest to exercise his/her franchise they shouldn't be voting anyhoo.
For those that say there need to be more voting...
In the US state of Ohio, a state where referendums and initiatives are often completely overused, they will be voting in November on how close strippers may stand to patrons in strip clubs. Should anyone's time be wasted on this? It's bad enough the legislature worries about that (and passed the 6ft rule to "reduce drug use", causing outrage among strip club goers) when the school funding system was ruled unconstitutional ten years ago, but they refuse to change it.
The school funding system was ruled unconstitutional because it:
a) Relies on forcing individual school districts to go out and try to plead with voters to get that .3% property tax to buy new textbooks for the first time in 20 years. (They often fail, meaning shitty schools for all, because "we dun need the guvmint teachin ar kids nuthin")
b) since it's a property tax, means that schools in poorer areas get less money per student.
Liquor licenses must also be subjected to popular vote. For a store to be able to sell all types of alcohol on all days, it must sometimes go to the voters 6 times. Different licenses for beer and hard liquor on weekdays, Sunday afternoons, and Sunday before noon.
Judges are popularly elected, and parties openly run and support candidates.
There was once a referendum on the legality of hunting doves. Tax dollars at work.
