Matsu Matsu:
Re: Was Urban II a Christian...
There are two ways to answer this question. Yes and No.
By their own standards, and the standards of their times, yes they were. By current standards, no.

That's the problem with history. People insist on interpreting it according to current thinking.

Actually, true students of history (not the laypeople dabbling in quasi-history) try desperately to avoid that trap – hence the impetus behind my question sequence. If a Pope (or in my sequence, Popes) doesn’t stand up to one’s definition of Christian, then either that definition is truly problematic or one must evaluate the complexities of one’s specific temporal/cultural milieu before labelling them (which is why when legitimate historians label Hitler a Christian, it was a decision that wasn’t arrived quickly or without noted reservations – like Burleigh’s work).

That's because the relevant and original arguments would fit on one or two pages.... that's the problem with these debates... it degrades into logic vs. emotion.

DerbyX @ Sun Jul 31, 2005 9:59 pm

Actually logic and emotion were very basic to this thread.

Who has the right to define Xtianity? Shephersdog, Lily, and Ruez felt that they were morally allowed to define Xtianity and to qualify who was allowed to call themselves Xtian and who was not. I used written word and verifiable evidence and they used there own personal Xtian yardstick.

Can a Christian answer this:

$1:
Aren't Christians baptised? So if your baptised doesn't that make you Christian period?

Are these people not raised in Christian family's and raised on Christian values? Would that not make you Christian?
