JT is a prime candidate to win the election.

... because he is photogenic ... and that's it.

The Canadian people deserve the crappy governments that we get if that is the main criterion for choosing leaders. It has certainly been an obsession of the Liberals to run such people since Pearson's time (Chretien being the only exception).

Depends on the situation. At the moment Harper is mostly busy shooting himself in he foot. He is looking good (I assume to most people) on the Ukraine file tho. If that heats up more that could be a real asset to him. But the big one is the economy. If it's doing well, people probably won't want to rock the boat, if not, throw the bums out and put in the ones that promise us a better deal.

But the big one is the economy.

Well, the Tories just navigated us through the biggest recession since the dirty thirties. Harper, an Economist, goes up against Trudeau, a school teacher who grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth. Perhaps Justin can run our economic lives better than the Tories can but they have proved none of that and they have no horsepower under the hood to make such a claim. All they have to run on is "soft" stuff. Justin will have to kiss a few million babies, pretty soon.

with harper at the beginning of the journey giving his famous "if we were going to have a recession we would have had it by now" speech and Flaherty saying deficit over his dead body, only to reverse course. They steered us thru the recession on the solid ship the liberals built, and immediately starting to spend by cutting the GST, the worst tax to cut, all for the sake of popularity.

They steered us thru the recession because they were in power. So if you give them credit for that, you'd have to give them blame for steering us on the shoals as well. There are many worrisome indicators in the economy. If that comes to bear, time to give the guys who haven't proven anything a chance, rather than the guys who have proven to have fucked things up.

The high dollar, for so long, was a very destructive shoal for Central Canada, not that the Federal government had a great deal of control over that. What appears to have happened is that the U.S. dollar collapsed, rather than ours soaring.

Trudeau is clearly no Paul Martin nor is there anyone of Martin's calibre in his livery. Whatever they think they have to offer, none of it is reaching to voters, so it's Harper's election to lose, rather than Justin's to win. This is assuming that Harper is going to hang around for another election. He probably will ...he seems to like control but if one of these scandals gets too personal, ...

andyt @ Mon Mar 31, 2014 9:17 am

It's pretty well always the govts election to lose, including this one.

How come I can't post "fuck that " on the CBC? CBC double standards, defend the "shinny new pony" at all cost.
They put this in their headline.

"Liberal leader was emphasizing his passion for the sport at a charity event in Ottawa"

*Bzzzzzzzzzzzzt*

Stephen Harper is a politician, not an Economist.

Well, he was an economist before he went into politics. I mean, he had a life before he became a pol, you know.

Harper is a university graduated Economist. He is very unusual in that respect. Every Prime Minister since Confederation has been a lawyer (except for Alexander Mackenzie, back in the 19th century, who was an Engineer.) I find it rather refreshing to have someone who isn't an ambulance chaser heading up the caucus, for a change.

He got a masters in Economics, but he's never been employed as an Economist.

A person can study Law, and never become a Lawyer.

JT is a prime candidate to win the election. He's light on substance but he looks pretty and speaks well.

Thanks OTL. We can always count on you to regurgitate the Conservative talking points.

The f-bomb ain't much of a bomb any more since cable.

Well, maybe not as an economist as such, but he held high positions in private business which means he knows how to run a country as well.
