as an American transplant, I'm really tired of the racism remarks, ugly Americans, uncultured etc directed at this country.if we have become uncultured americans it is because the country has been diluted with every possible foreigner imaginable---the Anglo prescence/influence.. has diminished considerably ...bothe the US and Canada are still young in comparrison to Europe, hence the growing pains. I think it has done quite well given all the ethic influx that have and continue to pour into its land . We have problems..and I for one am disgusted by the whitewashing of American history and the need to be politically correct--JMO.... Europe's history speaks for itself, and the US and Canada pale in compassion to the ethic cleansing/racism/religious intolerance etc...wars!!!!. The US is not perfect by any means and people who dismiss Canada as an insect on the shoulders of a giant are truely ignorant....but then again, it is what I have come to expect from some of my brothers and sisters across the pond..apparently they watch too much TV or read the slanted media.... people around the world have bascially the same concerns and worries. .just an observation....

You can't really call it racism, it's just stupidity.

If europeans hate us or dislike us or not care about Canadians then why when we go over to europe wearing anything team canada related do we get trampled by people looking for autographs.....

In closing, I say again: Nobody cares, Canada.

What a load of utter horseshit. 'Insect on the giants shoulders' ??? lmfao, why create a thread just to bash Canada by blatantly telling them no-one gives a shit, then saying 'Dont take it personal'...if you dont want them to take this kind of thing personally then you dont have the balls to post it in the first place.

I'm a European, English, and I've not heard a single fellow countyman say anything negative about Canada or Canadians.

Generally, the folk that I know think that Canadians are pretty cool.

Also - the American's "isolationist" policy in the 20's and 30's certainly didn't help deter the Fascist nutters from declaring war on the Universe.

And........since when did Canada pull "our sorry asses" out of the European wars??? PDT_Armataz_01_27 The Canadians were awesome friends & incredible fighting troops (as were the Aussies, Kiwi's, Indians etc), but it was the dear old U.S. of A. that pulled our sorry asses out of trouble.

America's isolationist policy grew out of British and French arrogance in forcing the Versailles Treaty on Germany when President Wilson was fighting for an equitable peace that could've been a lasting peace. Wilson grew ill from his pursuit of peace in Europe and a majority of Americans blamed Europeans for Wilson's illness and death and isolationism was a reaction to this.

The Versailles Treaty worked out pretty well, didn't it?

That's why when the next war came along US forces took orders from US commanders and the US insisted on Western Germany being a free nation and not an occupied nation. In fairness, only the French opposed this plan among the Western powers. So at least England figured out that pissing on the Germans was probably not a bright idea.

Wilson approached the German's to negotiate peace without having the decency to consult it's so called "allies" who had already sacrificed millions of young lives on the blood stained fields of France. Talk about arrogance!

Also - what about the Italian front? US troops commanded by commanders? I don't think so.

It was little wonder that the French wanted an occupied Germany, after the Germans had raped their country. It's easy to be the big US world policeman when your Country doesn't have land borders with the most militarily and industrially superior nation of the 20th century. Maybe if Cuba were a super power who had successfully invaded and then subjugated the American people to a brutal communist regime, you'd be a wee bit more sympathetic to the French position.

I'm not trying to get into a fight with you bro. I like Americans and am very appreciative of what you guys did in WW2 - but some of you guys do come across as being a bit arrogant re. your world views. :?

Say what you will. History never had the opportunity to prove Wilson right or wrong on peace with Germany. However, the Versailles Treaty was proven a disaster on a global scale. When the French invaded the Ruhr in 1922 they sealed the fate of Europe seventeen years later. The USA dictated terms to Europe in WW2 because, based on past experience, the Europeans would otherwise go about setting up for WW3. In my estimation the absence of WW3 in the history books proves the USA right.

Also, just for the fun of tweaking your knickers, it was not Germany that destroyed the French Navy in WW2 it was Britain. Should Britain have been more sympathetic to the French at Mers el Kebir or Toulon?

Sorry old boy, I didn't think so.

xerxes @ Mon Jun 20, 2005 1:27 pm

Hey Bart, have you ever read Paris 1919 by Margaret MacMillian? You might learn some interesting things about the Versailles Treaty and each participating nations motivations.

PJB @ Mon Jun 20, 2005 1:49 pm

Why are both Canadians and Americans so obsessed with what other nations think of us? I am Canadian and have never been to Europe and I doubt if I ever will. The governments seemed to be obsessed with external image rather than internal problems. The United States seems to want to be percieved as the gentle giant that brings peace and democracy to the world. Others perceive this as nothing more than a, almost religious, crusade to Americanize. Canada trys to be perceived as a peacekeeper. Granted some of the ideas that Lester B. Pearson had were well intentioned, the aftermath seems to have tainted his vision.

That being said. I am not overly concerned is some person living in France or Germany thinks that I am arrogant or whatever simply because I happen to live in Canada
